another huge music great, legendary jazz fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon lost his battle to a rare form of cancer, Neuroendocrine Carcinoma at the age of 68. He was diagnosed just a few months ago. His illustrious career included a year with Weather Report, and he also played in guitarist Larry Coryell's Eleventh House fusion band. He was a solo artist to the Blue Note label in 1972.
Mouzon was known as one of the world’s greatest drummers, and he worked with many prominent artists in both soul and jazz including Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, and Les McCann. He also played with Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana, Patrick Moraz, Betty Davis and Chubby Checker. Robert Plant, lead singer of Led Zeppelin, during his acceptance speech for induction into the 1995 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, listed Alphonse Mouzon as one of the band's influences from American music. He was a composer, arranger, producer and actor. In 1992 Alphonse Mouzon formed Tenacious Records, a label that primarily released Mouzon’s recordings. Throughout 2016 Mouzon remained active in the music community, even as he battled his illness. He will be greatly missed by the jazz-fusion, soul, R&B community. His legacy of greatness will remain and will be celebrated for years to come.
