RIP Alexi Laiho

Sorry for your loss Robert.

With regard to Laiho, I see him as an indirect casualty of the 2020 covid epidemic. The guy struggled with alcohol addiction for a long time, but was committed to getting over it in 2019 in order to focus on recording and playing live. Then covid happened. You can imagine where he went when gigs and recording were all put on hold due to covid. Straight to the bottle. R.I.P.

Unfortunately you may very well be onto something with that. When it said Long term illness, i wondered if they were alluding to alcohol as that's something they often say when someone loses a battle with addiction.

Chris Dudek (Sodom drummer) drank himself to death around the same age (42), back in 2008. The official cause of death was 'liver failure', but it was caused by him drinking himself blind every day for twenty years. Another example was Jesse Pintado from Napalm Death and Terrorizer, who died in 2006 from liver failure and diabetes at the age of 37.
I heard the same about Jeff Hannemann from Slayer. He got bit by a Brown Recluse, lost a lot of flesh on his hand and arm and took time off. Within a year or so he was dead and people wondered if that was due to the bite, until his widow and bandmates disclosed his chronic drinking. He was slowly eroding for decades and looking back, you could see the bloating in him. Lots of folks joked he was fat but it wasnt weight. Actually tragic

I used to drink quite a bit...several shots of scotch every night. But, I just up and quit one day, thinking it wasn't good for my liver, amongst other things...
Thats awesome dude! Drinking is a touchy thing. Some people control it well, some dont, some like yourself get it under control and put it well behind them and thats really the best course.

These days i have a beer or two on weekends, maybe one an evening in the summertime. Holidays, ill drink a glass of wine or champagne ( admittedly a few too many on new years lol) Rarely drink anything hard except on vacation on the beach ill have a few drinks. I probably could and should cut it down even more but compared to 12-15 years ago, its a massive improvement. From 18-23 those years were fuzzy lol

There are days that I don’t drink anything but water, but one of my vices is a Diet Coke on the way home from work, beers and me are when ever I feel like it, most weeks it’s about 8 per evening, about 4 days out of 7, and it’s been that way for a very long time.
Thanks

That's who i always drink with it seems : myself lol

I’m a social drinker. I usually don’t drink unless I’m with friends that are drinking too. Otherwise I just don’t feel the desire to. I find myself fortunate because of that as on my dads side of the family alcoholism and substance abuse is a serious problem. Shame that it’s taken so many great musicians and now one of my favorites.

Sorry for your loss @Robert Herndon

For what it's worth, nobody in the Finnish media, or even on forums, really speculates that he'd fallen off the wagon. To my knowledge he'd been quite dry for years, I believe that was part of the reason why Roope was fired from CoB in 2015 as he's a bit of a drinker.

Alexi apparently had multiple health problems that were caused by his past drinking. Sadly he wouldn't be the first example among our "national heroes" to first drink heavily, then sober up but with irreparable damage already done which eventually has caused them to pass away...
