Rick Beato, Anyone

I have no problem with people playing what they want and what inspires them, and definitely encourage it so please don't misunderstand. But when we get into discussions around here of the state of Rock music, something that happens fairly frequently, and all we end up drawing reference to is 30, 40, 50 year old music (something I have been guilty of myself at times), then I tend to understand why people think the genre is dying. If guitar players/musicians themselves are so fixated on the past and not promoting and playing new music then Rock really is probably doomed.

One thing in particular that I personally can't stand is "Classic Rock" radio. They've been playing the same songs from the same bands over and over, ad nauseum, since I was in high school. I honestly don't know how anyone can tolerate it, yet I get the impression that if they try to branch out or update in any way their core listeners lose their minds and demand they go back to the same predictable, worn out handful of songs.

I have to say, I do listen to other music Serena Ryder, Colin James to me they have some great songs, the Trews, but I find I like to listen to them on occasion, I like some Country rock, but what really gets my blood pumping and makes me want to play guitar is 60s,70s,80s and some 90s. My Wife really likes 60s. When we travel to the trailer and driving in general throughout the spring and summer months. We get serious radio 90% of time its on the 60s, and the other 10% of time its on Willies Roadhouse she likes the old Country twang. I don't know how anyone can tolerate heavy metal or rap, not being disrespectful of the ones that do, I know there are some here. As long as we understand not everyone will like the same Music. I had a great childhood growing up in small town in Northern Ontario . I don't believe I live in the past and don't want to mislead you that my Life is not as good now as it was back then, on the contrary. But growing up in the 60s was a total different way of life than it is today, and to this day I believe it was abetter way of living back then. I like to call it when Men were Men and Women were Women, and fun things back then weren't so complicated like I feel they are today. So listening to those good ole rocknroll tunes, keeps those memories alive and for me that's special. And it seems there are still many that feel the same way.

And I have said this before, you have me looking at covers to learn .
I have worked a little bit on Ratts
Lack of communication, I have most of the rhythm down, just not timed enough to post it.
Better get back on it. And a couple more

I get what you are saying, but if the only music that inspired me was the music I grew up with I probably would have stopped playing by now because it would have become so predictable and boring. What makes it exciting to me as a listener is hearing something that I have never heard before and hopefully being surprised by it.. That then inspires me to play and explore things I may not have thought of.

I understand what you are saying.

What has kept me going was the ability to write songs. If I want a new song to sing, I don't
go the radio. I write one.

I could write before I was really ever proficient on the guitar. I wrote things that were beyond my abilities.

I've said many a times, if it weren't for this ability, I would have quit playing but not listening to music.

Are you maybe confusing listening to music and understanding all the aspects of a recorded song.. Please, this is no disrespect intended.

One can listen and enjoy music without having to understand what makes it so great.
Just because we hear songs or have become familiar with, doesn't mean one fully grasps whats going on.

Believe me, I am no expert in this. I humbly look for crumbs, which to grow from, myself.

This is what makes Rick Beato so cool.
Rick Beato breaks down the songs and its parts with understanding.
Thus, with this new understanding of an old tune, lies within it, the very creative tools to create even more music.

Rock n Roll is not about reinventing the wheel so to speak........

If one just listens to music, then one is dependent on what others put out song wise.

Now if one plays an instrument, one has the power to create, and is only limited by there own beliefs in what can or can't be done.

You said this above,
" What makes it exciting to me as a listener is hearing something that I have never heard before and hopefully being surprised by it.. "
A simple change to,
" What makes it exciting to me as a listener is hearing something that I have never understood before and hopefully being surprised by it..
Then this you said will apply,
"That then inspires me to play and explore things I may not have thought of."

Where do you think this new music is coming from........

I mean no disrespect to you gball.
Just trying to give you a view from a songwriting perspective.

What your pointing out, is a whole other problem.

The commercialization of music as a whole. Corporations owning and controlling the music we hear. Isn't radio bought out and on auto pilot.....Fewer and fewer bars where bands can play originals.... Hasn't it been all funneled to The Voice and Americas got talent type shows.

They won't let Rock die because of the money involved, yet they won't let it live a natural life either.

I don't think music dies out as much as gets replaced, and this done by the younger generations.

A farmer has his fields. If he dosn't give the fields rest ever so often, the new crops suffer in quality. I'm hoping were going through such a time as this
in Rock.

No disrespect taken, my brother. We are all here to learn and share our opinions and observations.

And, I'm with you. As I have stated many times on this forum, I do not play covers/other people's music. I get zero joy from that, and no matter how much you change something around it's fundamentally someone else's vision. Sometimes I just noodle, sometimes I noodle for hours, sometimes I record and work diligently on my own stuff (not nearly as much now that I lost my writing partner) but whatever I play is my own and I always try to challenge myself to created something I have not heard a million times. I learned a lot of songs playing in cover bands many years ago, and I can still play a lot of them but it's a savage bore to me to do it or to learn someone else's music.

The new music is coming from the same place, IMO, just being done a whole lot better than I am capable of. We all woodshedded as kids and young adults and learned lots of covers in the process, and then amalgamated that learning to become our own thing. I was honest when I said never heard before - not everything is simply a regurgitation or interpretation of the past and I do believe there are plenty of musical ideas out there we just have not heard yet, as opposed to having heard and misunderstood. There is of course the learning that musicians do along the way, but what gets under my skin is when creativity creates something new, or presents it in a new way. It may not happen often but it still happens.
