The devices (whether tube or solid state) in our pre-amp amplify voltage. Very simply in English, gain refers to the amount voltage is amplified. Cheers

Good high gain is so subjective. I found the 5153 to be too compressed it killed some of the punch as did the 6505 although a carefully found middle ground and much presence seemed to work ok.
The new Mesas seem to do very well amd are still articulate. The JVM is excellent as well but care on the gain knob on ch 3 amd 4.
