The last few days have been complete crap.

My wife has had problem with her right leg since she was a teenager, and the doctors believed it was du to some unspecified damage sustained at birth. However, recently they discovered three cysts pressing on her spinal chord in her lower back. They hadn't showed up on her MRI scans in the early 90s. They explain her problems, and she was scheduled for further scans next week. However, for the last few weeks she's been having having some serious back pain, and on Sunday we had to rush off to the ER to get her some serious pain relief. She was given an injection and some pills, and everything seemed fine for about a day.

But yesterday evening the pain came back, and this time it was a lot worse. Her leg started swelling, she could not walk, and the painkillers didn't work alt all. We went back to ER, and after waiting for offing ages it was decided she had to go to hospital. At the hospital she underwent several examinations, and finally got some medication to help relieve the pain.

They discovered one of the cysts had started bleeding, and this was causing the pain, swelling and loss of power in her legs. She is still in hospital, and the doctors are discussing further procedures. She will most likely have an operation of some sort within the next few days. The good part is that she is in hospital and is being taken care of, and the medication has brought some of the swelling down, and she is now able to stand without much support again. She can move the leg, but is not able to walk. It is likely that she will get her strength back after treatment, though. I refuse to let myself think about the worst case scenario of her losing the ability to walk.

Our boys (aged 10 and 14) are taking it like real men. They are scared, but happy mommy is in hospital and being taken care of. They also understand that she probably will be fine again with the right treatment.

I try to stay positive, and when we went to visit her earlier today, she was in good spirits and feeling a lot better than last night. I 'm currently out sick from work with bursitis in my left shoulder. But I'm getting treatment, so it's not a problem. In many ways it's a plus right now, because my kids have a week off from school, and now we are able to visit my wife anytime at the hospital. The biggest annoyance is that playing guitar is painful after more than 20 minutes, so I'm taking it easy. I can't stay away completely from the guitars, though, and I've been playing these lovelies on and off today. Keeps my mind occupied and gives me positive vibes.

I am so sorry to hear this. Do they think the cysts had been there since the '90's? Any chance of them resolving on their own?

I am sorry you are in pain also. Surgeries for bursitis are very effective if it ever came to that, and arthroscopic surgeries have quick recovery times.

I hope your wife is home and happy soon.

Thanks for your concern.

The cysts have probably been there at least since the late 80s. Her condition has worsened gradually, albeit very slowly, and based on that there is little hope they will disappear on their own. An operation is likely the solution, but the proximity to the spinal cord naturally makes the doctors consider things very carefully.

My shoulder isn't particularly painful as long as I don't strain it, but I have problems moving my arm freely, so work is a hassle. Sleeping is also a bit difficult. The doctor told me to rest for a few days and gave me some meds. I'm pretty sure it will be fine quickly. No reason to feel sorry for me!

Ouch! Sounds like your wife went thru a little bit of Hell there. Here's to hoping that she makes a full recovery...

Is surgery an option for you in dealing with your bursitis?

Thank you.

I don't think my bursitis is severe enough to require surgery.

This is all just horrible. Luckily, she has been diagnosed and it sounds like there are treatments that will put this all right. I'm hoping this is the case and she will soon be up and - maybe - even better than she has been through most of her life. It certainly puts the bursitis into perspective although I'm sure that is no fun either.

Here's hoping for both of you.

As I said, the bursitis is not a real problem; it will pass. The timing was actually good, because it has given me the opportunity to stay at home with the kids who are on their winter break from school, and visit my wife more easily. As you are saying, there is a good chance she will recover fully, and if we are in luck she might even be better in the end. My fingers are currently too crossed to play the guitar...

Gahr I read your words a couple of times and I still don't know what to say. You and your family all seem like very good people and very strong people. The love you have for each other is the bond and the strength you find at these hard to near impossible times. My prayers will continue for you guys. You will pass thru this difficult time.

Wow! Really sorry to hear this kind of news. I certainly hope she is well taken care of at the hospital and they are able to get her
back to full health! Please keep us up to date on her progress...sending positive vibes your way...
