Here is my first revelation.

Chemist / inventors during the Vietnam war were trying to come up with a liquid plastic that would harden when exposed to air, much like todays super glue.
This was due to the wet SE Asian climate; plaster of paris would not set up and dry when trying to cast broken bones.
