Rant: people complaining about living in a wonderful city

Figured id throw this perspective out there to anyone on either side of this topic.

As ive mentioned before, i live in West Virginia ( the title beside my name mentions that obviously) and for the record: it is NOT by choice but rather both A) being born and raised here and B) stuck in place due to economical reasons. WV is like the Hotel California: checkout anytime you like but you cant ever leave. This place gets its hooks into you if you are middle or lower class and is nearly impossible to escape from a financial angle. Speaking of economics, its no secret this is a depressive and backwards thinking state, compounded by people who take no pride in their property or can obtain businesses to operate from within it ( pretty much every depiction you see of WV is true minus everyone being barefoot 24/7)

But to escape the doldrums and monotony of existence here, we usually make at least one or two great escapes each year for a vacation and a lot of that time, its to Virginia Beach, 6hrs east. If anyone has ever visited it, you can attest to its clean, organized and largely peaceful resort city atmosphere ( there has been some publicized gun violence recently this year in the off season however). It has the longest continuous pleasure beachhead in the world believe it or not. It also happens to be home to TONS of military bases, so lots of active and retired veterans live there ( namely from NAS Oceana: home of the US Navy's Atlantic Air Superiority Fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornets)

But what always gets me, is people like this video here, who are fortunate enough to live among a city like this and utterly complain and whine about the smallest issues like hearing Jet Noise or Tourists ( from late April to mid September) as if this qualifies their city to being a veritable hellhole of nightmarish proportions. As mentioned: ITS A RESORT CITY AND MILITARY BACKED!

You want to see a hellhole? Take a trip to WV. Enjoy the crippling poverty, one of the highest drug rates in the nation, debris strewn terrain, undeveloped cities that are virtual Scooby Doo Ghost towns and literally nothing to attract any residents or commercial industry. If you're lucky enough to live among a financially successful and well organized populated area? Suck it up cause it can always be much worse than you would imagine

I generally ignore this stuff. There will always be people complaining even when they have what most others would generally envy. I can't tell you how many people I heard bitching about living in LA when I was there - like, really? Anything imaginable in the World is right down the street and there's amazing weather, and you want to bitch about some petty BS? But, I guess the reality is that there are dudes out there that are tired of banging supermodels, so...

Is that ghost town with the underground coal fire that will burn for the next millennium in WV? Otherwise, pretty much sounds like any other rural area I've lived in. The locals up where my cabin is go to Canada in the summer to get away from the Citiots. Yes, they made up their own word.

Its the same everywhere---
Ive lived (luckily) in "Tourist Destinations" most my life now --- and EVERY day I hear a local complain --- "Damn tourists why dont they go home"
In the Keys it was the worst the TRUE "born and raised" "Conchs" hated any Mainlander --- yet 99% of them had businesses that LEACHED off the tourist dollar (90% of the economy in the Keys is TOURISM -- 1o% commercial fishing) and I would just shake my head and smile--- and quip "yep if they all go home we can do nothing all day except figure out how to cover rent $ "

I used to say COME ON DOWN!!!!!!! BRING $ !!!! --- besides they are a riot to watch ;)

That's Centralia, Pennsylvania but yeah, it looks like a LOT of WV towns minus the pillars of sulfuric smoke emanating from beneath the fiery ground below your feet lol it actually inspired the video game series and later movie series: Silent Hill ( which ironically is based in a fictional WV town)

There's literally hundreds of old towns that are now just unincorporated areas that used to be booming until around the early 1960s. Mostly they were coal camps that grew to towns but when the mines began to go bust, so did the towns. Some still have houses in the areas that were former coal company owned properties and people live in them still. Other towns however are straight out of horror movies, in that you see a sign and theres nothing but overgrowth and foundations of former homes. Population 0.

The state USED to be quite nice. Working class but humble folks who took care of their state. Now, its one of the biggest opioid addicted states in the nation and because of rising pill prices, Heroin took hold and ushered in gangs from Detroit to handle the illicit markets, which in turn brought lots of violence. Its actually impressive to see such a rural area so enthralled with a drug market like youd see in a large city.

Precisely! If youre lucky enough to have the world and all of its excesses and glories at your fingertips by merely living in an area that provides it? Enjoy it! I'd gladly trade out lol

Absolutely! I get the whole " locals only" concept, since you're invested with life in a tourist area 24/7 365. But like you said, if that drives the economy and all you gotta do is bleed the turistas dry to make a living? Open shop and come on down!

We get that tourist bashing here at the Jersey Shore.
The tourists are (or were, idk nowadays) called Bennies, and the common cry was "Bennies, Go Home!"
I understand the crowding and traffic added to what is ridiculously maddening here already, but they add a huge amount of support to the local economy. I was never in the tourist related business, but I get it.

Met a lot of women from "up north" at those seaside bars, including one who eventually became my wife.
Somewhere back in the 20th century.

Though I would like less suburban sprawl, I like it here.
It is not the city shots you see during the intro credits to The Sopranos here.
We will be moving out of state eventually though.

Isnt that strange having to say " well in the 20th century..."? Lol myself, i forget that all the time and when talking to my kids about the 80s and 90s, im thinking "oh that was just a while back" and its at least 25-35 years ago. I am getting old lol

MAN, Mike, and we who are SUBJECTS of Marylandistan, would gladly flee TO WVa. where one can be free as afforded by the Constitution. WVa may have those warts you speak of, but here almost every right afforded to us by the US Constitution has been stripped from us by the State Legislature due to gerrymandering, graft, Big Money " We can't dare let our citizens drink 44 ounce Super Big Gulp Soda" type ridiculous laws such as Mr Bloomberg put into action in NYC. Tainted by a certain type of Nanny State mentality and lust for power to control everything so that the source of their money streams continue without limit of amount or time they can suck off the system for without any risk of losing their job once in. A place where there is no hope of change for every generation since practically Lincoln was in office. And a place with such wonderful nicknames as Bodymore Murderland, or Slogans like, Baltimore, the city that Breeds,,,,,,,,,,, or Welcome to Maryland, What's in your wallet?

Md has it's good parts, but sadly, the overbearing weight of being taxed to death or growing up knowing that if you can't get a job making $300k- $500k a year, you will never ever get out from behind the weight of the costs to live here. I sense West Virginians have similar stories according to you. Only at least you guys are free to protect yourselves.

PS. Regarding the issues surrounding the drugs,,, That IS a major problem wherever it thrives.
I know a few fellas who are locals born and raised in small town Montana. They tell me their world is turning into South America/Mexican drug cartel funded meth heroin bs up there too.

We largely are void of any suppressive laws here, that's one thing we got going i guess.

Sometimes we are too free with some dumb bills proposed, like the time a few years ago when a bill popped up for no real reason over legalizing raw milk for public sale (non pasteurized, non homogenized). The two delegates who were pushing for it, proudly drank a glass each on the Chamber floor to show its safety. And then about an hour later they were filmed lying on a couch with wash cloths on their foreheads and a trash can to vomit in: they'd pretty gotten ill from it lmao

Like a lot of states, we're pretty deep in the pockets of energy companies , namely coal and natural gas since we sit on the largest deposits of coal and shale on this planet. That unfortunately doesnt pass down to the people like you see in some energy rich states ( i.e Alaskans get a monthly stipend from oil reserves) Here, we pay one of the highest energy bills in the nation from coal powered plants ironically enough lol

They dont put back into the state either sadly, especially when surface mining, which destroys entire mountain tops down to bedrock and removes all liveable top soil. You can see miles and miles of barren rock which is kinda depressing really. Its a cheap way to get coal and use minimal workers, versus deep mining that doesnt tear up the land and employs hundreds.

lol I feel ya' on this, SW PA, my house was built in 1900 (the whole patch town was built by a coal mine and is on top of one) and there isn't a straight board in it unless I redid it. We have been remodeling it, siding and windows going in as we speak. Well it's raining today. And yesterday my Daughter calls us wanting to go in with them on some property with 2 big houses on it, they live in 1 and their Pastor owns all of it, so Dawn & I would end up with a 2 acre place with a new barn & 4 bdrm house.....in Alabama....the oil field is dead here now, and will be squeezed even harder by this administration. I have job offers here (still employed by my old company but laid off) but we are thinking about selling the house and making that move.
