I never knew RR played an SG. This would be my current dream SG. SG Special, aged/antique white, white guard (large), hb's/t-top's/early Pat No./PAF's, aged gold hardware, dots, no headstock inlay! Only thing I would change is the bridge which I would swap for a simple compensated wraparound. Be still my heart! I would be cool with simple white button tuners, too, but I like the aged gold hardware on the antique white theme.

What's going on with that pickguard? Looks like the top side has been cut square

Indeed. I would imagine it was custom cut/custom made when the guitar was converted to humbuckers.

It would be cool to learn some more about the history of this guitar, aside from the obvious.

Plus it has pickup rings combined with a partial batwing. I suspect the batwing thing was in part to cover the longer P-90 openings. The pickguard is also extended down to the selector switch, so it is an odd one! I'd have to see it from a better angle but I am hoping he did the intelligent thing and did not put the bridge studs through the pickguard like on a batwing SG

Also I found this picture from the Quiet Riot era, with a different ('70s) SG.
