So I was browsing through YouTube and listening to some of my favorite bands, when I started seeing all these suggestions and reaction videos for Queensryche's Live In Tokyo performance of the song "Take Hold Of The Flame". I mean there are TONS of these videos, a few dating back roughly 3+ years ago and some pouring into the last few weeks. Some are reaction videos from music fans of different genres outside of metal, but a lot are from vocal coaches who are using this video as almost a teaching tool and analysis.
It's pretty crazy to see a band that I literally grew up on during their Operation: Mindcrime and Empire days, which were over 30 years ago at this time, being reinvigorated to entirely new audiences that would never typically listen to metal, let alone a band such as Queensryche. While it's really pleasant to see a band like that FINALLY get some bigger recognition, it's also sad that it took this long and at a time when the band is a bit fractured ( although still active and very much playing great).
But I thought I'd share a few of these videos, because the reactions are kinda funny from these coaches who have no idea what they were in for. Most I guess figured " Oh, another 80s metal band that yells, big deal". But when Geoff Tate ( who might have been the absolute BEST vocalist in that era honestly) hits the famous soaring high notes before the song transitions from soft to full on rocking out, it absolutely floors them and they are scrambling to find out more on the band lmao
Check these out, if nothing else for the first few minutes if you don't have the patience
My favorites are the first two
