Public Service Announcement

Google had a saying “Fail well”. It’s about continuous learning and learning from failures. An example I used to tell my engineers was:

We are going to build a rocket to take us to Mars.
We work all year on that rocket.
We launch that rocket but cannot make it to Mars, we only can make it to the moon.
We failed, but damn we made it to the moon.

Today’s PSA:

On July 2, 2025 we were exactly at the middle of the year.

Which means from that day forward we are closer to the year 2050 than the year 2000.
Reminds me of Pink Floyd. As much as I think that RUSH is my favorite band, their early albums, the soundtrack to my youth, I think that hearing Dark Side of the Moon for the first time, predates 2112 for me. As we know of the fate of Syd Barrett and Rick Wright, Gilmour and that other guy ( his politics rub me wrong) The genius that was Pink Floyd cannot be denied. I do believe I was roughly 13-14 yrs old the day we first spun my buddy's sister's copy of Dark Side on their record player/stereo. There was never any record like it before or after in my mind. At 61 yrs old now and having lost all my parental, grandparental and too numerous friends to count. Even my buddy and the other friend we likely shared the album with have been gone now for over 40 years. Their deaths and the impending losses of others when they were all 17-20+ years old, shaped my life in permanent and indelible ways I could never undo. The passing of TIME and how we fill it, sure makes these words rank up there with even the thoughts of some of the literary greats. I think I will have to take a time out to meditate as I listen to the Floyd.

For me, I am glad for a place like this, a place 40 years in the future from my early days, a place where strangers can become friends for life.

Time

Lyrics

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught, or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

As I listen to TIME in my headphones, not only are the lyrics, genius, but I am filled with an understanding as I sense something today vs. any other time I heard it over my lifetime.

The song has a pace, a progression, and a way it is delivered with the phrasing it employs. To me, that whole package of lyrics, pace etc conveys not only the understanding of the words that the Floyd penned for us, but one can lose themselves through the involuntary sense in our beings of the passage of Time as it occurs along with the words and music recorded for reflection and even as we now know, posterity.
