is the shim causing the bad neck allignment?
I wouldn't think so, the shim is already filling in a gap existing on the bass side of the pocket. If anything it would maybe have to be a thicker shim on that same side to kinda "displace" the neck a bit more towards the treble side of the pocket.

I'm thinking when the guitar's back home in spring, I'll revamp the pocket as needed to fit a better neck, plug the current bolt holes in the pocket and drill new ones to screw the new neck on. Hopefully by then I'll have acquired one of the items in my GAS list for this year: a benchtop drill press.

when i put the two teles together, i worried that the neck wouldnt line up properly and strings would be falling off the neck, but i got lucky and both lined up perfectly.
