I worked behind a Parts Counter from 1980-2020 when I retired. I never asked a stupid question like this.... but while waiting to be served at an auto store.... I have heard it asked.
No.... what I would do was more just to be a jerk, without the customer realizing it. In the tractor business many times the needed part was very serial number dependent. Obviously, the customer never had that info on him. But I'd been doing it long enough I could usually ask a couple questions and narrow down to what the guy needed. Questions like.... what color is the hood. Or on garden tractors, is the muffler on the side of the engine or under the hood. Easy questions like that. Most could answer. But there would always be that guy that would give me the deer in the headlight look. Guess what..... I'd send the guy home to get the serial number. Even if I was 90% certain what to give him.
Moral of the story. Don't be stupid at my parts counter.
