I’m so sorry. Just hard to believe it got so bad so fast.

Our week there was spent in Hana. Just spent one night on the west side so we’d be closer to airport the next morning. Rather than get up at 3am to drive the Hana Highway back to the airport.
 
It's truly awful what that island has suffered and endured. They said the town of Lahaina is now 90% destroyed and satellite images certainly confirm that.

The left mage was days before and the white and gray images on the right are homes reduced to cinders in a town of 12,400. Absolutely devastated.

There are some horrific stories coming out about what survivors had to resort to in order to escape, including literally jumping off rock cliffs into the ocean.

My heart breaks and goes out to these people
 
I love Lahaina. It was where me and my wife stayed when we got married up in Kapalua Bay. We stayed at an old hotel that had been around since the whaling days of the 1800s when whalers from Nantucket would stay there. Lahaina was originally built as a New England whaling town outpost. Maui is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and I've always wanted to go back. I feel bad for everyone there. Especially those who fled the flames by jumping into the ocean.
 
Was texting with one of my cousins today that has spent several weeks a year for a bunch of years on Maui. Not sure where they stay, but she’s very familiar with Lahaina. She started mentioning businesses, restaurants, etc, that are gone. Most likely, she knows people who live there. She’s pretty messed up just thinking about the devastation and loss of life.

What terrible devastation. We have been there 2 times, 8 times in the islands.
Maui remains a favorite.

We’ve been three times. Only island not visited is Oahu. Our favorite would be Kauai. Just a little slower paced than Maui and the Big Island.
