No idea. You can't really see the indents on the knobs, so just twist until you like what you hear.

Pedals:
Equal lack of any idea. Just reach down and turn until you smile.

my clean and my blues -- -if I want STUPID dirt I crank the gain on the lower level------hit the "contour" and RIDE THE LIGHTNING

Y'know Adrian, I still use pedals in front of the Mesas. Yeah, they have ludicrous amounts of gain available, but there is still something special about pushing the input of an amp with a good clean boost or subtle OD. Oh yeah, and I use a fuzz in front of the green channels/clean. I don't really ever use a clean sound for actually playing, just noodling, so it ends up being a clean platform for distortion/fuzz/weird stuff.
