I got sidetracked and just realized I haven't had a chance to come back and post how things turned out. I was a little surprised there was so much more love for the Top Hats and in my honest opinion that is what I know and love. That's why I have decided to stay with Reflectors. Yep.
You see, i have been wrong twice on this guitar before by going with my gut. At first I didn't like the VOS scheme but I have come to really love it. I then was all about ripping out the pickups because they were not what I expected. But instead I tried some adjustments and have them sounding pretty good as well. So because I know I would love to see it with Top Hats, I also will believe deep down in my heart Reflectors are probably the right choice for it. A wise man (actually just RVA) once told me sometimes just because the guitar doesn't look or sound exactly like we expected to, we are quick to make changes but if we give it some time we might end up really loving it. That so far has been true for me with this guitar.
A couple of benefits of the Reflectors I have found:
1. It clearly helps identify it as a 1960 vs a 58 or even a 59 (if you can find any modern plaintops anymore).
2. They also sit lower to the body than I was able to get the top hats without reaming them. I don't like knobs that stick up high off the body.
