Are you in Control of your Tone?

  • Yes, I found the right guitar and the right settings to get the tone in my head.

  • Yes, I can make any guitar give what it has to offer. I have different tools for different jobs.

  • It depends. Sometime it all works and sometimes, it just doesn't. I have not figured out why yet.

  • Yes, and it is more about the amps than the guitars. My tubes sing!

  • No, but it is more about the amps than the guitar and I have not found mine yet.

  • Tone is about the room, mostly. Tell me where I am playing and I will tell you if I can make it work

  • I play live and I depend on a good sound guy. With the right man at the board, anything is possible.

  • None of these choices make sense to me, so from 1-10, I rate myself a _____ in tone control.

Now that we have extra money in the hopper we got a couple of good tech guys. The first couple hours are blues and traditional rock and roll. I have been playing first guitar because I will zone out if I have to do a rhythm. I have the attention span of a collie. I have the help of the tech guys when the knobes on my Amp are set. From that point I do any changes on my volume and tone knobes. The pedal for the amp is in the drawer along with most of the pedals. I have the wah wah pedal and that is it. The very few pedals are in the control drawer of the sound guy. I just have the one guy for the two hours I play. Back up singers, key boards, second and third guitar are set in with the drummer and bass player. It has been great so far.

IMG_7866.JPG IMG_7989.JPG IMG_8217.JPG IMG_9603.JPG IMG_9615.JPG I use three or four guitars. My Les Paul Standard, my Japanese black beauty, my Strat and lately my
Brian Moore guitar. It has some special effects and its tone is strong. They are even more complicated now and are called IGuitars. The Piezo sounds very very much like an acoustic and the coil split really works on this guitar. The Brian Moore had a Graft Tech nut that turned into power like the one on the ESP I dumped. That was the only poop point on it. It is one of the guitars I had the longest and I am only appreciating it now. The volume and tone are right on the point. I bring a back up now just to feed my paranoia. I never needed one since my Dream Guitar, Gretsch has stuff drop off it. I picked the number two on the pole. The Cherry Burst is the Brian Moore, it is near a tobacco burst by now.

For me, it’s all about the amps. The differences between the guitars set the stage but it took me too many years and too many dollars to get to the point that I am truly, genuinely happy with my tone. It came in the form of a Mesa Mark 5:25

I usually get what I want from my gear but dice roll funny sometimes. Many of the individual pieces react to temperature and humidity variations, the position of the amp, the venue's insulation and quality of electric supplies... Sometimes no matter what you do, you still sound hairy.

That thing looks almost like an antique polygraph.

Reminds me I need to pick up an enigma machine--------

Need a ride? I looked and my enigma machine took a shlt on the mildest day of the year. It was one of them with green buttons. I'll just beep because my drugs should start working by the time I hit your place. I know guy, Willy the pimp. For fifty bucks he will fix us up. He might have some of his secret raccoon sausage. The secret is it tastes like Jim Beam whiskey and not raccoon.

:dood: I am the other "amps" vote...when I discovered the right amp and settings plus some pedals I had what I was looking for. I can use any of my guitars and be happy since I found my go to amp...

...funny thing is I'd given up on amps, went the modelling route and lo and behold one of the amp models let to me buying the real deal and selling both my Helix and Kemper!

Thank you Kemper for bringing me to Carol-Ann...
