For years, even when my kids were still home I tried to get into video games. I have a Xbox one and the only thing my GF and I play is golf....

I used to play Silent Hunter - a WW2 u-boat simulator. Very realistic.

The last living u-boat commander - Reinhard Hardegen - turned 105 yesterday...I write to him every year on his birthday.

What do you write?

As a child, I was a submarine nut. i read everthing i could about u-boats. Hardegen's career was one marked by his ethical and humane treatment of survivors, many of whom he met after the war who thanked him for their rescue, so he stood out in my mind.

Initially, I congratulated him on his 100th birthday and he replied. After that, I would write to him on his birthday.

I also have spoken quite at length with Otto Kretchsmer and Erich Topp.

My love of submarines was one reason for my Navy enlistment.

Robert, I remember that U-Boat sim! I wish I could have a Mac friendly copy of it.

Dude!

I used to record my conversations with Topp and Kretchsmer and I asked them lots of tactical questions, which I used in my SIM...

Playing at 100% realism, I sank more tonnage than any other commander ever did. We had some close calls, which included two weeks limping back to base with an un-submersible u-boat.

I spent many hours getting in the right position for an attack:

In general, I attacked close enough to use my target for cover...

sometimes attacking through the space between ships in a convoy...some tactics described to me by Otto Kretchsmer and Erich Topp.

I can’t say much about what I do, but i’ve been involved with the 726 class and work with several ex commanders. Great stories.
