Picked up a Dot

I've been shopping for a semi-hollow for a while but I put it on hold because I just spent my guitar fund on a Les Paul i posted about in another thread. I woke up yesterday and checked Craig's List per my normal routine and there was an Epiphone Dot for $350 CDN. They usually go for around $450 - $550 used around here. It is a natural blonde finish which I really like. I texted him a low offer of $300. He came back immediately with $330. (that's $252 US). Two hours later I was playing it at home. I wasn't too happy with the tone. It was little muddy. This morning I put in the Sigil pickups I was going to put in the new Les Paul until I decided I really liked the stock 490s in the Les Paul. The Dot sings with the Sigil pickups. I am going to have to upgrade the pots as well. I don't like the taper on the stock pots. I like to use my guitar volume to control the amount of dirt in my sound. The volume pots don't have much sound below five and the tone pots are next to useless with very little change in tone until around two when it just turns to mud. It looks like this will be my modding platform for now.

sweet--- congrats love the color --- I only see red ones here...or black sometimes
That colour does seem rare. I see Sheratons and Casinos but not usually Dots. I like the black on black look with the Sigil pickups. The stock ones had chrome covers.

I love a natural DOT. That is a great deal too! I admire you being able to fish out those pickups in one morning. It is quite tedious

My first go at pickups in a semiholllow. Yes it was tedious. It will be a real pain to switch out all the pots and wiring. It looks like I’ll have to ream out the holes for everything unless I can find a Canadian source for good metric parts. You would think that with Canada being a metric country Canadian parts suppliers would stock metric.

Congrats! hope it ends up a keeper.
I read somewhere your past experience with the Dot was not impressive.

I had a Dot like that - for 1 day. The truss rod was frozen, the hex socket derformed and the frets had been filed down unevenly, it went back.
I really liked the guitar looks and feel, but, nope.
Had to eat the return shipping, but it was for the best.

It wasn’t that I didn’t like the dots I’d played. They just didn’t seem like anything special. This one wasn’t at first either. It played well enough but there was no mojo. The Sigil pickups and new strings have added some mojo. New pots, switch, and wiring should make it a really nice player.

Nice purchase Kerry, congrats.
Love the natural finish.
I reckon you’ll continue to be pretty happy with it.

I get where you’re coming from with Dots in terms of mojo. When I first decided to look for one, many of them didn’t feel ‘right’. There was just something about them that didn’t sit well. Then one day I went to look at the one I now own and it felt like a real instrument and I just had to have it. I didn’t even plug it in before I bought it.

I took my Dot out of the case for the first time in ages yesterday and asked myself, “why don’t you play this more often?”
