PHIL X -- was "right"?

I was in CA from late 1976. Bought it at a little mom and pop shop next to a KMart in Orange CA. Long since closed.

WOW, DonO, I had no Idea you had made the trek that far back. I had dreamed of relocating there back when I was in college and actually took a 1 way car ride to Fullerton with a classmate from Dulaney high school here. As she wound up staying for a couple decades from getting her foothold at her cousins' there, I took my first $39 Southwest flight a couple days later and stayed a couple weeks with another school buddy who was living in Fremont. Since I was not successful securing a job out there and not wanting to be more of a burden to my friend, I flew back to BWI and never made it back except for a couple mission trips to Tijuana and a couple visits to my Fullerton friend.

It is funny how many of our Forum members might recognize some of the old and still operating music stores I mentioned here in the Baltimore county, Howard, Montgomery, PG, Anne Arundel areas. Gball, for one, and even ChasFred down there in AZ.

Smitty not so much, because he transplanted INTO Md, from the Midwest.

Well you were definitely in my hood. I finished my college education at Cal St Fullerton after doing 2 1/2 years at Drexel in Philly. Would have been great to have you out here.

I do believe there is a difference in tone from -- lets say a 2 pup lester and a single pup lester...
And while PHIL X is "correct"

IF the tone you like is from any 2 (or 3) pickup guitars....... then THAT IS THE TONE
Would BBkings Lucille SOUND like Lucille without the neck pup??? -- even IF HE IS USING THE BRIDGE -- Would Claptons tone be the same if he used a Jr instead of a burst 2 pup? -- how different is his tone with a 3 pup strat??? --if it in fact effects tone then it helps to also MAKE the TONE we know.....would ANGUS sound like ANGUS with a JR? WOULD MALCOLM sound the same had he LEFT the neck pup in his Gretsch??? .....

ANd this is a perfect argument for owning both kinds ;)

HAHA I just recalled and can relate my first realization of TONE dating back to my youth.

Before I could drive, I had an EAR. BUT it was an ear for the sound of many particular cars sounded. Certain ones, I could tell as I heard them pass nearby on the byways.

My first most recognizable were VW Beetles. this later expanded to Small Block Chevies, Ford Mustangs, and still applies as I can hear these a mile away and know it is a Mail truck Jeep or civilian model of a similar Jeep model. Hard to say why they all sound the same, but for whatever purpose it serves, I can tell how certain cars sound.
