A couple of questions please.

If it is just a question of reversing the hot and the ground, why does it matter that they are 4 conductor pups?

Does reversing the wiring always result in out of phase pickups? Are there times when you need a magnet flip?

As Sysco said. And because the alternative is a single hot signal wire in a ground sheath. They can't be reversed without generating a load of hum.

Cuz, 4 conductor wiring has actually got 5 wires. The 5th wire is the ground. You are going to keep the ground wire attached to a ground. If you look at the following pic, to wire one of the pickups out of phase to the other, all you need to do is reverse the green and black wires.

On a pickup with 2 conductors, if the ground wire is not grounded in its normal position, then the noise shielding will be lost in the cabling.

If you have at least two signal wires in addition to the ground screen, you can switch the wires. If it is just one signal plus screen you have to flip the magnet.

I've Peter Greened my Gibson SG and it's permanently out of phase in the middle position. Both volumes have to be set the same exact for that optimal nasally tone. I love it!

I never have errors and that's why my insurance company sends me a great Christmas gift. I send them a juicy check every June. ER doctor I would pay maybe $9,000 a year but put surgeon on that and I pay in the neighborhood of $34,000. A rose is not a rose by any other name.
