Pedal Loopers / Switchers

RVA

Ambassador
So in order to uncomplicate my signal chain, I was thinking about breaking my pedals down into separate boards. Then I thought a really good loop switcher might be a good solution. Anyone use one?

Some interesting ones are

One Control

The Gig Rig

Any advice on whether this is a good idea, and if so, how to approach it for my situation?

Thanks

There are 2 ways to go here:
Either way you need a loop selector that is "and" rather than "either/or".

1- make a bunch of viable pedal chains, dirt, modulation,
time based, etc. and put one chain on each loop.

2- use a loop for each type of effect, loop 1 for dirt,
loop 2 for modulators, loop 3 for delays, etc.

In your situation I think the second choice would be better.
It gives you the ability to say, activate your modulator loop
and then pick the one you want by turning on that particular pedal.
With that setup you can pick and choose pedal combinations at will.
It will take a bit longer but you do not need the ability to rapidly
change sounds that is required in a live gigging situation.

I’ve always been tempted to build/buy a multi loop pedal, but never got around to it.
I did pick up a Boss LS2 in hopes that I would like it for blending distortion/fuzz with bass. It didn’t work out for me....but it did work out as an effects loop for my board. I use it to engage any effects that I would/do keep in the effects loop...delay, chorus, reverb etc.
These days, I have it turning the whole loop on, or off.
I had seen it on Dave Slovin’s boards, and looked in to it. It has been useful.
I’d rather have a simple, true bypass loop sometimes...like for fuzz.

I say it depends on your goals.

If you want to sample different pedals in as pure a form as possible, I think the looper pedals are good, especially if you have a lot of individual pedals.

For live use, looper pedals still have their place. But, you first need to whittle the rest of your pedals down to what you need and what makes sense for what you’ll perform, then apply a looper pedal as appropriate.

I find that simple is better for live work.
This is the most complicated pedalboard I have ever
owned and usually I take a smaller simpler one because
I seldom have need for all that this one can do.
I would get lost on Smitty's board, or Dave's.

It has no wah. When I take a wah it's about the wah
and the other stuff gets dialed way back in capability,
especially the delay section. It has blue dirt instead of
orange dirt because blue dirt sounds better with the
wah to my ears. Like I said, it's about the wah.

Strictly for at home, I have one board for the front of the amp (the one on the right) and one for in the loop (left board). Right board has tuner, compressor, TS9,Blue Driver, OD2, EQ. Loop board has volume, chorus, delay, delay, Reverb, Reverb.

Each board in/out are connected to my patch panel, as are most of my amp in and amp ef in/out. Through the patch panel I can configure any of the amps with the pedals with just a few patch cords.

Well done fellas. Simple and effective boards.

Tony, I have been intrigued by that dispatch master since you showed it to me at the first guitar show. The tones sound killer online

It's a very nice sounding pedal.
I just leave it on all the time.
The new version has the jacks
in front and a silent switch.

I thought it might be a kids noise maker !!
My wife bought a little karaoke toy for our granddaughter …… She set it up next to my 401 in the family room …… Several days later she says, “I see you eyeing that new Studio Gear !!” 26072
