Parting Out Silkyn Super 50

THANKS for the info and clarity--- as it seemed like these where huge P.O.S.'s from an outsider view--

good luck with the parting and repairing and rebuilding :)

I can see that perspective, as time has passed.

This wasn't offered like a Monoprice dirt cheap all tube amp.
It was a gamble going in, I knew that.
Some were received with issues.

These were not sold by Silkyn; the company folded and the stock was bought out by a wholesaler.
Most of these sold ebay with 1 bidder. Mine cost me $230. to my door.

I would not have bought a 50w amp but early reports were this was a quality built item with some great
Fender Blackface cleans and a Marshall 2204 based dirt channel.

i already had plan B - gut it and build the BF PR in it - at the ready.

I think this info came from Bud at O'netics, who built our replacements:
The China PT manuf. had a good reputation at building smaller xformers.
THe autopsy revealed a very good quality build, with an Achilles heel....
Turns out they failed to increase the insulation at a critical spot(s) not taking into account the additional heat the larger PT produces.

Here are some tease shots of mine to help get the enthusiasm level up.

Old PT , working fine. I was going to play it until it died, but reconsidered since I did not want to chance collateral damage.

Here is the new one:

The wholesaler who purchased these was not supposed to sell them as working units. They were supposed to be torn down and sold for parts.
When Mike Soldano got word of this through our inquiries he was not a happy camper!

Ugg...late arrival! That sucks...I have been having a terrible time with USPS!

It has arrived!!!
Well packed sir!
The exterior box was a bit soft, and accordion-esque, but the little box wasn’t bad! First brief inspection shows no superficial damage. Wires etc are intact.
Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
I’m stoked!
I’ve stashed it with the amp parts, and will tackle it immediately after my current project.
:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:
:celebrate2:  :celebrate2:
