Papa's Got A Brand New Amp -

Agreed 100%

But when boosted they have some great harmonic content, at least to my worn out ears.

Reminds me a bit of the Paul Gilbert rig rundown where he mentions the Marshall is loud and clean and that he gets all of his dirt from the pedals. I've personally never owned a NMV Marshall but I used to play with a guy that had one (no idea what model) and it was just so brutally loud before there was any scintilla of breakup going on that it was borderline impossible to use it in the band. He used a Maxon Sonic Distortion in front of it to keep the volume sane and it sounded amazing. Better than the JCM-800 I had at the time.

My approach has always favored the elimination of 'break up' or speaker distortion. Celestion advertises it's 60 watt Neo Creamback as follows: "Celestion’s engineers have developed a new and innovative way to better harness the mighty forces of the neodymium magnet, enabling us to create a guitar speaker that can deliver authentic Creamback tone with ease, while preserving the benefit of neodymium’s much lighter weight. You still get the low end punch, warm, vocal midrange and sweet refined highs the Creamback is famous for: push it hard and enjoy the ‘race-car growl’ that sets pulses racing...."

Not quite sure what that means, but I have always preferred lots of clean headroom that doesn't distort...

Those Creambacks seem to get really good reviews.

Greenback flavor, with more power capability.

$169.00 gamble...LOL
Ya, I know.

I was going to offer to buy it from you if you didn't like it, until I saw the retail price!

Right now I'm using either the 12M Greenback, or the 12H Anniversary Greenbacks in my cabs. But thanks to Covid, I really am not even using these right now, mainly doing in the box recording, no one to jam with, all my band mates suffer from serious health issues and we can't risk jamming in person. Thats why our informal group name is 9 Lives, we've all died at one point or another!

Sorry to hear about that!!!

Yeah, Man..I got GREAT speakers on hand...WGS Reaper 55Hz 10 pounds....Electro-Harmonix 12VR75 8.6 pounds....but trying to keep that bloody weight down. I am loading and unloading an amp into the trunk of my car twice a day..everyday!!!

I get the weight thing for sure, otherwise that Reaper would work sweet!

Nothing to be sorry about bro, I'm alive and kickin', got my good buds on TTR, and in real life, great gear, great wife, great kids, tomorrow is not promised so play that solo today!

I agree 100% with you!!!!!

I guess I could pair the Reaper with the Jensen Jet Neodymium for a combined weight of 14 pounds, making the 28 pound cabinet tip the scales at 42 pounds...still less than my DSL40C at 57 pounds, but heavier than I was hoping for.

But a pair of Neodymium speakers would only weigh 8 pounds, bringing the total weight of the 2x12 down to only 36 pounds!!!!

Definitely a weight "savings"

Then you, sir, need to speak to the folks at Electo-Voice (16 pounds of magnet!!)

The "race car growl" is speaker cone breakup, that snarling midrange thing that Greenbacks (and therefore, by extension, Creambacks) are so known for. They break up early and often, and the howl of the speaker cone is probably 50% of the sound of a distorted amp that we all loved as kids...the other 50% being the amp itself

That sounds like total poop to me. It sounds like a blown speaker effect. Who in God's name would TRY to achieve that sound???? Are we hearing the same thing??? Guys talk about break up and I want to throw up.

When I was setting up my DSL40C, I rented Primo Rehearsal Studios in Riverside for a week just to demo speakers and pedalboard configurations. I found that the Electro-Harmonix 12VR75 (101db sensitivity rating) could be driven almost to '10' on the volume knob without ANY type of distortion or 'break up.' Just loud, clean sound. Once I had this clean headroom established, then and only then did I start adding overdrive.

I tried G12H-75's, Greenbacks, Veteran 30's, British Leads, G1265M's and ALL of them sounded like they were being blown apart by '7' on the dial of my DSL40C's and that was brand new speakers and without any overdrive. Just clean and loud.

I had surplus cash at the time - that I do not have now - so I am being a lot more cautious because I cannot afford to experiment right now like I did back in 2017.

Some of, if not a majority of, the most famous guitar recordings of all time have relied on speaker cone breakup to help define the sound of electric guitar as we know it. The effect of driving the cone hard enough to induce distortion alone has probably sold untold Greenbacks for Celestion.

May not be everyone's thing, certainly doesn't seem to be yours, but for those of us that like it chasing that moment when you dig in and the speaker finally throws in the towel can be like a drug. Everything turns to liquid midrange, notes blend seamlessly into each other, and it makes the guitar come alive in your hands. Unfortunately no-one has found a way to replicate it without high volume (again, unfortunate only for those of us that like it).
