Panic: Better than coffee

I'm cleaning out my closet this morning, trying to find a part for a pedal, when I come across a baggie of a few 2.5" HDD. I connect them up one by one to my Mac and check on what's on them. One is a 128Gig SDD with nothing on it, but it's formatted for Windows.

I open my Disk Utility to reformat, and hit the "proceed" button, when my Mac immediately blacks out, shuts down and restarts. My heart goes into full panic as I'm thinking, "CRAP! Did I just reformat the WRONG DRIVE!"

Mac reboots and comes back up okay. Nothing gone, but the SSD drive is toast. Won't connect, unrecognized and when I tried it on my Windows machine, completely unrecognized. At least it was free. But I'm wondering what button I clicked on the reformat Utility....

I have an iMac in my closet -- it just ---- quit one day --- nothing black screen no sound-- it HAS a lifetime (my Sons lifetime) of pics-- and movies on it......Someplace -- locked in the darkness of its "brain"
I really need to find a "tech" that can get the hard drive? or WTF ever a 15 year old APPLE has out and download the pics to a jump drive......

I would see if they can FIX the computer but its 15 years old Im guessing it will not "RUN" on current protocols

It's the power supply board. Common for iMacs of that vintage. I have one too that died. Luckily, it was a backup for the kids to mess around on, and it dind't have anything of value not backed up. You can still salvage the data if you can get the HD out. All hope is not lost.
