P90 P90 P90 P90 P90 P90 P90 P90 P90 ... etc

Back to topic... I listened to the Doug and Pat show, and enjoyed listening to all the different
P-90s. Of course I loved the old gold tops, I've never actually even seen one of those, let
alone been able to sit close while one was put through its paces by a great player.

I actually loved the sound of the new Gibson, the mahogany one with new P-90s...
If anyone can make a P-90 like an original Gibson, maybe it's: Gibson?
All the new ones sounded good too, with maybe slight differences and lots of
sustain.

So what's the point of a shoot out? Maybe it's to determine that all you need to do
is close your eyes and pick one. Just buy this pickup set, and your tone and style and
pick attack and finger work and signal chain will sound just like this. ( ...a 54 Gold Top
played through an old '60s Vox amp in perfect condition, by an excellent guitarist).

Right... But still, it's great to hear these things, and I enjoyed hearing the new guitar alongside
of the old. That's what I have, a new guitar with new pickups, just like most players. I regard
most discussions of "old technology" as mostly academic... since most of us will never get a
chance to even look at any of the gear discussed... (that's a lot of mosts, I know).

But I think that's the reality for guitarists in two thousand effing seventeen...
We do the best we can with what we got. We have a lot, and the rest is up to us.
To hell with the old gear.

And after listening to Doug and Pat, I believe we are blessed with great p'ups to play with.
Right here and now. What they say about the new makers of cool new P-90s is true, they
do care and listen to individual customers. My recent experience has been with stock Epiphone
P-90s and Ken Rose P-90s, neither of which was mentioned above. But both sets had excellent
sound IMHO. Go figure.

My P-90 experience was mostly ignorance for most of my life. I listened to the Beatles as a
fan, but didn't ever see them play, and knew nothing about what guitars and pickups they used
to get the sounds they did. I just muddled along as best I could, never worrying that I couldn't
sound like them, or like any other star. I knew I'd never own a Vox Super Beatle amp, so I just
used what I could afford, (meaning what was available in local pawn shops).

I have been enjoying this thread, and everyone's thoughts and experiences. AND I have learned
a lot. Before I started hanging out on ETSG, I never knew anything about P-90s, and I've learned
even more on this forum, since we seem to have collected a number of the most articulate members
from that forum and others. Because of how much I learned in the last eight years or so, I finally
bought myself a P-90 guitar and have discovered that I've always been a fan of this sound.

I just didn't know it.
