On this day in 1982:

I grew up in Pasadena and saw these guys play at a local party right up the street from my current home in the 70s. I remember seeing them play before they changed their name from Mammoth to Van Halen. My mother's next-door neighbor's sons were on the VH road crew.

How cool is that! What were they like in those days? I recently read Greg Renoff's book "Van Halen Rising", and he described the Van Halen backyard parties as pretty spectacular.

I went to school with a girl named Stacey Agajanian, daughter of J.C. Agajanian. For her 16th birthday her father hired Van Halen to play in the backyard party which I attended just after they changed their name to Van Halen and started wearing spandex. Their name used to be Mammoth in the early days and they had a keyboard player by the name of Jim Pucey (not sure if the spelling is correct.) Jim had two refrigerators at his home. One was for food and we stayed out of that fridge. The other fridge had a beer keg on the inside, a that on the front, dixie cup dispenser on the side with a collection box. A note on the fridge said 25 cents per cup. You could use one of the provided dixie cups or bring your own cup of any size, still the same price. The logic behind this was that Jim did not mind sharing the beer, he just didn't want to clean up all the glasses. One of the parties I was hanging out with this blonde girl named Shawn, Shawn Roth. Turned out she had a brother playing in the band. For many years there was a sign painted on the outside wall facing west bound traffic on the 210 Freeway as you enter Pasadena reading "Entering Van Halen Country"

I used to hang out with a guy named Kevin Kilgore back in the 90's. Kevin's brother is Terry (tube tramp) Kilgore who played guitar for David Lee Roth after the split.
