Old Debate . . . New Thread

I am in Larry Carlton's camp after years of mods.....my amp is set first...must have clean--then crunch- then lead tone.

Then all stock guitars to manipulate for tonal changes. Purchased solely on pickup sounds

Clean on 5 on guitar volume--then break starts at 6-8 then dime for leads....

Strat for stratty stuff
SG for main stuff
others for detune or heavy strumming depending on what is required

thing is playing at same volume..home-studio-live all at kick drum level

same predictable sound from me all the time....lesson in last year....PLAY...but i am not into gear tho for the hobby....into music..i get sucked into the vortex of thinking i am missing something..only thing missing is PRACTICE to manipulate what gear i have for what musical job is thrown at

not sure where that came from..lol...but all i know is the playing time is way up vs taking things apart

If I have a preference it is for 50's wiring but it is not set in stone. If I change pickups or electronics in a guitar I always use 50's wiring but if I like the tone stock then whatever is stock works for me. As long as I can get a decent tone from the guitar and can go from somewhat clean to a nice blues crunch with the guitar's volume control then the wiring scheme doesn't matter much. Usually but not always 50's wiring does that best.

yesterday...we played 27 guitars into 9 amps & 9 basses into 3 rigs

Conclusion for me/i sound like me no matter what & certain guitars flavor a lil dif but could use any of em with EQ tweaks

Marshall from hard rock up(palm mutes-down tune-probably never again as i age)
Fender-found the mojo for my style ..set & forget with a RAT to EQ shift

Guitars..whatever feeling but 14 SGJ with 61 alnico could be the only 1 needed

Bass-P into Ampeg SVT or PF

now thats just me & my preference..only thing gonna do anything to my tone..is PRACTICE

been screwing around on internet way too long since accident..it showed on first song or 2 in studio this year..now..this xtra gear got to go..its a major distraction but it took going thru it to get to my happy zone....stripped my playing area this week...Fender amp 1 side-Ampeg bass amp other..feel relief....

just today i sold
Epi SG iommi
Epi SG 66
Marshall jcm 900
Ibby sc420
Ibby RG320
ESP LTD 7
Yamaha fg

To add to the debate, let's add a fourth way for grins.
The uncoupled version, which I prefer.

Here's the diagram copied from the above article. What Dirk Wacker is saying, is to switch the #2 and 3 connections of the volume pot. So the hot leads from the pups will be connected to the volume pot's middle (#2) lug, and the volume pot's output wire will connect from the volume pot's "#3" lug to either one of the input lugs of the selector switch... Right? …

And my Hamers with 2 volume pots and 1 tone pot are wired like this:

My Hamer Studio Goldtop:

This amp ODS #094 is what set the hook on my Dumble amp builds Gregor Hiden
was kind enough to send me photos 2008 that was my 5th ODS-100 build

After I nailed #094 I went on to building #102 #147 #183 I had a sound in my head that the other builds
did not have The 50 watt Green Hornet still blows me away.

now know why i opted back to all stock guitars..depend on the tone change as i roll off vol..its an integral part of my sound. I work tone & vol on guitars a ton and once my amp is set, with 1 or 2 pedals(1 on hot lead & 1 under for crunch) I like having the radical tone change in that roll off..its like having another guitar setting completely. Used to do all 50's.
