Ok, I’m excited.

Yesterday turned out to be a great day. I went out for dinner and drinks with my colleagues. They are a great bunch of guys. We don’t do this very often, but we all agree we should, because it is always great fun. This alone would have made the day great, but the icing on the cake (and the reason I’m writing) is this:

Earlier in the day I scored a 1965 Gibson SG Standard husk. Real cheap. As some of you might know, a 1964 or early 1965 SG Standard is my number one dream guitar. However, I have never really thought I would ever be able to get one. But now I will. Ok, it is only a husk, but still. I already have some original 1964 parts that I will be using (pickups and a TRC), and good repros are widely available. And over time I’m sure I’ll be able to procure more genuine vintage parts.

When I get it I’ll start swapping parts from my 1964-ified 2014 Derek Trucks SG and my modified 2018 Standard. The 2018 will probably be sold, and provided the «new» guitar turns out to be good, the DT will take over the open E slide duties from the 2018.

It was cheap for the following reasons: It is worn, it has a repaired neck joint and an unoriginal nut. In short, it is what you would call a «player’s grade» husk. The seller didn’t have the exact measurements, but from the (rather bad) pics he sent me, it seems to have the early 1965 11/16’’ nut width. This would basically mean it is the same as a 1964 guitar. I have no reason to suspect that it is not genuine, though. And if it turns out not to be ok, I can return it.

Most likely I won’t be able to finish the guitar very quickly, but this is a project that could fulfill my biggest guitar dream ever, so I’m in no real hurry. I hope to be able to complete it within a year.

Naturally, I’ll post some pics when I get it, and then more as the «build» progresses.

Have a nice Sunday, guys!

Congrats!
Is it me or are there 2 of this thread?
Or did you score 2 husks?
Or is there a 2nd seed pod Gahr out there in Invasion of the Body Snatchers fashion?
Which, of course would suck for a blues player to be devoid of emotion.

Have you reached through a worm hole slightly forward in time, so there are two of you posting from both of those time dimensions?

Yes, there seems to be two threads. No idea how that happened... Maybe one of the mods can merge the two threads?

So, the quest for hardware has already begun. I can't buy everything all at once, and I want to get parts that are at least relatively period correct.

So far, this is what I have (either as parts I'll pick off of one of my existing guitars, stuff I have lying about or on order):

A set of aged Kluson double ring, double line tuners.
1964 Gibson patent sticker pickups
1964 TRC
Set of tall pickup rings
Wide bevelled pickguard
Nickel Vibrola (need to look at how to age this slightly...)

What I need:
ABR-1 bridge, nickel, w/nylon saddles, studs and thumbwheels
black tenon cover
switchtip, white
complete wiring harness, 500k pots
black reflector knobs

I want all metal parts to be nickel.

I also need a reasonably decent chrome covered bridge humbucker (Gibson or Duncan) to put in the 2018 Standard I will be selling to pay for this project. I'm ripping out the late 1960s T-Tops I have installed in it and have a Duncan Seth Lover ready to put in the neck position, but I need a bridge pup.

Now, my question to you guys is this:
Does anyone have any of the parts I need, and would you be willing to sell them and ship to Norway? Naturally, I will pay for the goods and shipping.

Dude, the husk is a major score. Dicky Betts set-up for SG recommended. Angus Young Gibson pickups.

This IS a very exciting project! I'm really pleased you're getting the one guitar you really want - I hope the husk turns out well, and a player's husk is in many ways better than a perfect husk that you would be afraid of playing. You'll make this a really great guitar, you already know exactly what you want, the parts you need, and you'll adjust as you go along.

When does the husk arrive?

According to the tracking info I have, it will be here in a couple of weeks. But the postal services tend to surprise at times, both negatively and positively, so I am not sure, really...

That'll be a long wait...
