how does this work?????? where are the springs????
The springs are on the bottom:
Very minimal routing is required to install this.
BUT WAIT....THERE'S MORE!!!
Would you like to see another little bundle of love from Smitty's Wonderful World of Whammy!
Check out this little gem. This is a Washburn Wonderbar. They came in chrome, black, and
gooooold.
They were made for only a very limited time in the '80s. I think I got this one in about 1987.
The amazing thing is that it uses no coil springs! It uses a torsion bar. That's right, there is no routing required. Just screw it to the face of the guitar and screw the string lock to your headstock behind the nut. You will have to mod or remove your truss rod cover.
But, your li'l Epiphone can be dive-bombing in minutes!
They don't drop as far as a Floyd Rose. But, they will drop about an octave. They fill most whammy needs nicely, from the gentle shimmer stuff to fairly aggressive use.
Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers has one on one of his guitars.
Of course, they're pretty rare, nowadays, and quite pricey if you can find them. Back in the day, they were really cost-effective if you had them installed because the labor was so much less than installing a Floyd or a Kahler. The units, themselves, were not too expensive at the time, either.
Here's the bottom of the little beastie:
I don't have one, but Washburn also introduced the "Shift" plate. This was an adaptor plate that attached to the bridge and stop tail bushings on a Les Paul, so you could put the Wonderbar on a Les Paul, too.
