Indeed! The reason I no longer ride my motorcycle. Not as long as that is the way of things.
I have often considered the current nature of drivers on the road these days when it comes to my motorcycle time on the roads as well. Sadly, I don't see the roads ever getting safer and only worse. I especially hate that on our roadways here in Md at least, I not only need to keep my eyes open in front of me, but to the rear, side, roof and even under me for fear someone will be blasting up the road at 90 MPH in a 55 passing on the right as if no one will ever need to exit the highway and need to get over a lane or 2 to access the exit ramp etc. God forbid I would be driving a van or box truck or tractor trailer.

Over here passing on the left is an instant stop by the law. Somehow, with smaller and faster roads - and more crowded - we manage to have fewer accidents. And in Germany, where many of the autobahns have no speed limit, they have fewer still. I think the wide lanes and low speeds lull drivers into a false sense of security, and many of them drive half asleep.

Over here DonP, Sadly we have a litany of factors that cause the traffic to be hazardous.
To me, the primary cause is the flaw in our present day citizens. Sadly we are a society of selfish shipheads who refuse to be mindful of putting the needs of anyone else but themselves in their minds in their day to day lives let alone once getting behind the wheels of their vehicles. The rules I learned of safely using defensive driving has long been lost by today's drivers as a good proportion are OFFENSIVE drivers instead.
Now we have to contend with distracted drivers being a hazard as well and in greater numbers. Between cell phones, make up applying, GPS following, and just plain not planning trips wisely before setting out, distracted driving causes untold numbers of avoidable accidents.

I get that. Here in London if you drive selfishly, nothing will move. You will always end up with gridlock. So everyone has learned the art of "after you", of not driving into a junction unless there is a clear exit, leaving a gap where there is a side street so someone can drive into or out of it. It's taken a long time to reach this point, but I think 95% of drivers get it.
