…..Yep…Been a long time coming. I have had trouble justifying a New HeadPhone Day. I mean, I have some cheap but decent closed cans that have served me well for a long time. I also have some not so cheap open cans that sound stellar, but don’t really cut it for tracking, or mixing…they’re much better suited for listening in a quiet setting. Before I crashed last night, I opened my email, and saw some headphones in a “prime-day” email. They weren’t the ones I’ve been wanting for years now, but I went to look anyway. Well, wouldn’t you know it! The model that has been on my “maybe someday” list was on sale too…and at the lowest price I’d ever seen them. At about 12:15AM I decided to pull the trigger, went to bed, got up, went to work, and they were waiting for me when I got home…
I’m listening to Tool’s 10,000 Days album as I type…
Some proof of the occasion…

Nice Box!
No…really…it should make for a nice storage vessel.

Fresh out of the box! They feel…really nice…solid…I’m Diggin’ them!

Under the packing material, a big pouch with three cables (various lengths) inside! Excellent!

The only downer, in my opinion, the cables are “not quite standard” in size…at the end that goes into the left ear cup. It’s smaller than a normal 1/8 inch male stereo plug. I’ve done some looking, and find replacements readily available with a quick search. The small end that plugs into the left ear cup also has a “twist to lock” feature. We shall see how that fares in studio conditions. I can’t begin to count the number of times that I’ve mercilessly ripped the cable out of my favorite set of tracking cans while goofing around in the studio. I’ve always been thankful that they didn’t get wrecked, or wreck anything else by flying off my cranium.
This Tool album sounds pretty solid! Decent clarity in the lows. Good detail across the spectrum. I’m more accustomed to listening to this one on studio monitors. These are a bit fuller in the low end. Plugged into an iPad, they’re plenty loud too. I have the volume set lower than I normally have earbuds set, for the same intended immersive experience level.

ATH-M50x…So far, so good!
