NGD: SG faded v SG tribute.

Interesting. I have an Angus Young which I was gonna replace the 490T with, but the connector adaptor which it was supposed to have in the box wasn't there and it doesn't fit the 2011s... It does fit the 2013s though, so I might give it a try. I mention this because I've read that the AY is basically a 57+ with an A5 magnet instead of an A2. I don't know if this is true, and the AY should have a bit more output, but I might give them a swap just to see.

So far: I like the 490R; I don't dislike the 490T but it needs changing; I like the 57 neck, but need time to play around with it; I'm undecided on the 57(+) bridge, but need more time to be certain - the 57s seem to have a lot more tonal space/tinkering space.

I always preferred the bridge position in my Epi310, but I much prefer the neck in these two - I'm hoping the AY will give me a bit more of what I'm after.

According to the Gibson store on their website, the Angus young pickup is A5 and 9.2k, while the 57 Classic+ is A2 and 8.3k.

^ yep.

This 57 feels strong in the neck, has more output than the 490, which I didn't expect.

The 57+ feels less powerful, so I'll try moving it closer to the strings - the sound is nice, but it doesn't growl the way the neck does.

Tuners and inlays: just oiled the neck and added a bit of greese to the nut/saddles. The inlays don't look like cheap plastic, they look like pearl (pretty sure they're acrylic, but they look good). Restringing was a pleasant experience - there is no reason to change these tuners!

If I can just get a growl out of that bridge puppy without any mud then I'll be very happy with this purchase.

That reminds me of a Lynard Skynard tune...give me 3 steps mister and I'll be right out the door...buuuwaaahhhh!

;>)/
Great song, one of the Skynyrd songs we cover regularly
Gimme 3 steps gimme 3 steps Mr, gimme 3 steps towards the door, gimme 3 steps gimme 3 steps Mr & you'll never see me no more,
ah show me the back door.
Actually written about an experience Ronnie Van Zandt had. Being the only one old enough to be in a bar, the others were out in the car park while Ronnie's inside dancing with Lindy Lou, when her large angry boyfriend shoves a 44 in his face. One of the things I like about Lynyrd Skynyrd is they wrote a lot of songs about actual real life experiences. Like the song "that smell", written about Gary Rossington after he crashed his brand new ford torino into an oak tree & the amount of substances he was consuming, the "smell of death's around you" coming from what they had said about Duane Allman & the amount of substances he got through. Ok, rant over. Cheers

A big congrats on your SG Tribute. Lots of unique features on that Badboy... or Badgirl...

The 57s v the 490s: The 57s are strange in somuchas you can control the gain through the treble knob, not only the volume knob.
First thing came to mind was vintage style of wiring. It's kind of hard to tell if Gibson changed the wiring schematic on that pcb.

Restringing was a pleasant experience - there is no reason to change these tuners!
Not surprised with that decision... :celebrate:

I'm not sure, but they react very differently to the 490s; not just a different sound (actually the neck pups are quite similar sounding in many respects).

Not surprised with that decision...

Just easy, and work well - what's not to like? When you're playing and want functionality the tuners, knobs, neck, etc are spot on. Researching this guitar, folks were slaughtering it (folks who hadn't played it), but there really isn't much wrong with it. I don't even have a problem with the electronics; they work well and sound good.

So, I raised the bridge pup and it now kicks much better - not perfect yet, but more as I like it and growling at 10 on a par with the neck puppy.

Being worried that the faded wasn't getting enough attention, I put the future tribute in it's gigbag and just played the faded today - it's very nice indeedy, such an easy neck too.
