NGD.... Not a guitar

I was at freshwater bay Alaska dressing out two bucks brown bear full charge only had time to grab my rifle
shot from the hip blew the bear over backwards it turned charged again shot it the second time ran off in the woods
biting down trees the size of my leg one hour later tracked the blood line the bear was in a creek still alive
shot it through the shoulders it shattered it's left leg and it drowned
after that I contacted Weatherby and requested a 5 round magazine they said no
next I wanted a Barrett 50 BMG I checked one out 48 pounds unloaded no good
Got a FNH Scar 17S 20 round magazine installed a Geissele Super Scar trigger 2 stage 2 pound pull
when I tested it at the range it went full auto had to send the lower to Geissele I put a spring in backwards
now it will dump a 20 round magazine in 2.5 seconds if I hold it on the second stage zero recoil
the Trijicon ACOG 3.5x35 .308 scope is good Ray that owned the gun store trained me how to reload

That's an amazing story! Glad you played it out and got the win! Brown bears are for real!
I've read many stories where the bears have learned when they hear a rifle shot to come running, they can bully you off of your kill and steal it for themselves.

I'll share...

I got up to go coyote hunting one February morning.
I debated which rifle to take for the terrain I was hunting. Thought I might just take the ol 30-30 in case I was hunting in some close quarters, no scope to deal with. (Good thing I did)

I went south to my usual spots anf noticed a lot of hunters were out. (Javelina season, I assumed) Didn't want to bother them, so I turned around and went north to the pines.

It was muddy and patchy snow, but I knew the elk were fixing to start dropping antlers, so I turned it into a scouting trip. I hiked in off the road about a mile and a half when I got into a few groups of elk, cows on one side, bulls on the other.... I saw 2 young bulls sparring and messing around, so I got my (flip phone) out and tried recording them. Sneaking from tree to tree, always looking for big bulls in there somewhere. (I found my largest matched set in there the year before)

I was tiptoeing around for an hour with them, suddenly I heard something hit the ground! Not like a pinecone or a squirrel, but bigger! I whipped around to see a mountain lion charging at me, he was about 35 yards away. I quickly reached for the rifle on my side, pulled it up, cocked it in one smooth motion and dropped the hammer! The lion (now 15 yards away) dropped instantly! As I levered that ol Marlin I saw 2 more tails whip from around a tree off to my left as those 2 lions scampered off! My brain was working so fast! There were 3 lions here!
Then I heard and saw another lion about 65 yards off just sitting there, ears folded back and hissing at me! I pulled a bead on that one and thought "if you take one step, you're getting it too!"

No sooner did that happen as the lion I just shot (at) got up and began coming at me again! I had missed it in my rush, and it had just cowered down with the noise going off in its face .
Now it was about 5 yards away coming around a big cedar, I took aim and blasted it again through the cedar, hoping I had enough time to get another shell loaded up as it was pouncing on me... Well luckily I hit it with that shot and it began squalling and spinning around mortally wounded.

I pulled immediately back to the pissed off lion as it began walking off away from me.

I kept my head on a swivel for then next 10 minutes, watching for the other 3 lions as I just stood there and relived the scenario over and over. Lucky I acted fast, and lived to tell this tale.
I imagine a guy my size could fight off a lion.... But 4? I would have been lion food.

Turns out they had killed an elk there and they were all just sitting on it when I sneaked by. Lions almost always attack from behind you.

At the time of the bear attack I didn't have time to think but three nights in a row I woke up screaming at the top of my lungs
next when word got out my friends in law enforcement sent me real forensic files every photo had a hand gun next to the corpse
leg meat eaten away.
My GSP dog hated bears Jaxon took out a 8.5' brown bear ripped it's jugular vein out took a hour for the bear to bleed out
Jaxon was covered in blood washed him off not a scratch on him I had a brown bear tag went back the next day
something dragged that bear off I searched for hours nothing.

Nice looking rifle and one of the best all around magnum rounds. The secret service talked Remington into that round for their sniper rifles in 1962.

In the aughts between consulting gigs I worked at a Dallas gun store. The manager, Chuck had been there since 1964 and knew lots of the gun industry characters. Weatherby had put out a magazine touting their products. A Dallas guy Herb Smith [big African hunter] had invested / bought 20% of Weatherby back then as ol' Roy needed some funds. Part of the deal was when Roy cooked up a new cartridge he'd send a rifle and a case of ammo to Herb who would go to Africa and chronicle his safaris for the mag.

Herb came into the store and Chuck asked him about the recent magazine cover which showed a pair of cowboy boot prints in the dirt and a cape buffalo skid mark that stopped a couple feet away from the boot prints. Herb said the cape popped out of the tall grass about 50 feet away at a dead run headed for me.

Chuck asked what ran through Herb's mind at that point.

Herb said - I could run and be trampled, I could rush the shot and be trampled or I could take my time and make a good shot and maybe be trampled.

Needless to say he took his time.

Chuck remarked - I'd need a clean set of shorts after that.

Herb replied - Oh no, dry as a bone. It took a day or so before I could go...

My wife Anna would go with her father and grandfather on African Safari hunts
they used Westley Richards drop lock side by side rifles pre world war one.
after Anna's passing I sent her gun collection to her father I had no idea how expensive her collection was.
