I'm not sure what year my SG Standard is the serial number 1964 the CTS pots read 1/65
it has the wide fingerboard same as the 1958-1960 Les Paul Standard I had to re fret and replace the binding
the nibs took a lot of time and the new ABS binding looked like crap I found Royalite binding it's spot on

I don't know when Gibson decided to do this, but my guess is that they still wanted to use the fingerboards cut to the late sixties or early seventies dimensions with the narrow nut following up the board (or source slightly cheaper fingerboards, etc). On my older Gibsons, the fingerboard binding was always about .020" thick, and the nib was very small and hardly noticeable. I'm not sure the width of my Norlin Les Pauls' bindings, but they are also hardly noticeable. My newer SGs (2013 and 2019) have .060" wide binding on the fingerboard, with giant nibs that reach the full height of the fret. I wish Gibson would go back to the old way with the narrow .020" binding.

Interesting, I didn't know there was different binding. Mine seems to be about 3/64", but my eyes aren't that good and I'm not sure I'm seeing it right.

There was a different binding many moons ago. They used to do the nibs differently, on the Gibson bound fretboards of old…50s, 60s, and 70s…at some point in the 80s they started to use a different style/method(along with different/taller fretwire). By the 90s they were moving to what we get today.
Yours look very much like my 2012.

Well, this is certainly no reason to sell the guitar. If I don't get used to it, it's fixable.

It was for me, I was not going to fix it myself. The other thing is , I thought I would never adapt to the guitar neck

Oh wow, yes that's much thinner.

I'm sure my Traditional was the same as my Classic is though and I didn't have that problem with that one. I don't know why I'm having the issue with my Classic, something must be different.

It’s spotty…if you can avoid it happening, then please do. If it becomes habit, it will very likely become worse(that little gap will open up more). I had it happen with my SG the first practice session with the band…excitement and beer were flowing. After that, I sat with it, figured out how/why it happened, and learned to avoid the issue. Only had it happen a couple of times since…never as badly…not for many years now…like pre-pandemic.
That was just my experience though. Some habits are hard to break.
I can make my Gladiator LP-wannabe do it too...it has nibs in the same style…but I really have to go out of my way to do it, and it’s 5th fret on that one.
