NGD!! ...finally got my P90 LP!

Thanks guys, I'm loving the neck profile and it's been a blast to play P90s again!

I'm not sure these stock P90s are going to make the cut though, The bridge pickup is not bad, but it has to jacked way up to almost touching the strings to sound good and I'm not really liking that.

I have a few P90s laying around, time for some experimenting.
…and so it begins…

Haha! Only took 2 pickup swaps to find my bridge pickup! First I tried an SD Vintage P90 and while it was better it wasn't what I was looking for. Then I found my SD Custom P90. I did a search and found my old posts where I was talking about how great it was and how it was the best P90 I had tried and how it didn't sound like it has ceramic magnets in it so I went ahead and put it in. It's an amazing pickup, roll off the volume knob and it cleans up really nice, but reacts very well to pick attack to get some hair on top, roll up the volume knob and it eats humbuckers for breakfast...hell yeah, that's the stuff!!

I don't remember who it was that recommended it to me, but thank you again 5 years later!

Now on to the neck pickup, but not tonight.

I remember years ago “Alvis” talking about the 1/4 pounder but that’s a different pickup.

He's the one that recommended the SD vintage p90 to me for the Melody Maker I used to have. It didn't fit in that guitar, but I held on to it. It's a really nice P90, but not what I was looking for in this guitar. I might try it in the neck position on this one, but first I think I'm going to try my mini P90 neck pickup. I had this one in a one of my Warmoth guitars before and I really like it. I like it better than any neck P90 I've tried so far, but that hasn't been many.

Hmmmm. Crap, that sounds great. Of course, I won't change out tbe PUps in the 53 but makes me want to get another P90 guitar and try em.
Thanks, Steve!

It's funny how fast this guitar has become my #1. All it took was the pickup swap last night. Everything I've been doing over the last few years, from the amps I've been through, the cabs and speakers, guitars, pickups, pedals and my John H attenuator...everything has all come together now with this guitar being the last piece of the puzzle right down to the pickups I tried and tested years ago that finally got the home they were intended for. I'm in tone hog heaven over here.

Finally got a good pic showing the true color a little better. Here she is now with the SD Custom P90 and my Magneto Design Lab mini P90 neck pickup.

And another that shows the neck pickup better, but the color is washed out, ugh.

I took me all day to get that mini P90 mounted in there. I had to find spacers to use to make the pickup mount flush with the mounting ring, then I had to hold it all together to get to in there without it all falling apart and that was a trick, took me a few tries. Then after I played it for a while and decided it would work I went to take some pics and the chrome mounting screws stood out like sore thumbs and that wasn't going to work. So I had to hunt down some black screws, then one of them wouldn't thread back to the mounting plate, it took me about an hour just to get that one damn screw to thread, but I finally got it.:ROFLMAO:

That thing looks to have some “personality” now. Playing some of my favorite P-90s right now…in your honors….

It does. I was just going back and forth between this and my Tribute and I have to say, Humbuckers have nothing on this Custom P90. It does everything my Tribute does, but better IMO. A hot P90 does everything my HBs do so I'm not missing out on anything, but P90s just have something going on that HBs just don't have, it's hard to explain, and they compliment my playing style more than hbs do.

What type of neck profile is it?…50s?…or 60s slim?

It's a slim 60s profile. I measured the neck thickness yesterday at the 1st fret. It measures .0836". That's just slightly thicker than my Tribute neck that I love at .0831". That explains why I like it so much.

Here's a full description from Gibson for this particular year model, these were the only Classics made this way, the rest of them have some kind of weight relief and PCB wiring. Gibson.com: Les Paul Classic 2018
