NGD: Epi v Gibson...

^ I probably should have given it more time and changed the speaker over. The shocker for me was: 1) how average the effects were; 2) how it couldn't get anywhere near the Yamaha amp on tone. But, yeah, I should have forced the back off and changed the speaker. If I had, I may be singing its praises now and found some lovely tones. Maybe I'll pop to my mates house (he's only local) and change the speaker anyways to see how big an improvement it makes - the Celestion that came in the Origin sounded pretty nice (much better than the speaker that came in my DSL5), but it was a pretty high wattage and didn't really help me get gritty tones at apartment volumes even on the 3w or .3w settings, it's only sitting here doing nothing... I think I'll do that at the weekend; should be a nice and easy little experiment, and I can get him to buy me a few beers for the upgrade... :D

It could not hurt yanno....from what I have heard from ppl that get combos, the speaker change is what makes the difference...I for one, other than the 30w Line6 I have, all my other amps are heads...
I kinda figured, why buy the combo, when I will do a speaker change, so cost wise the head was a better choice for me since I have some nice 4x12 and 2x12 cabs.....Than I could put my $ into a good head that I would enjoy...,but I do understand that not everyone has the option of getting a head since the combo is easier....That said I just change the speakers and wahlah, they will have a nice amp...

Here is the first time I've ever seen a guitar the same as in this thread:

I don't know why, 1 year later, these guitars made in Nov 2018 are just not seen anywhere, not on the Epi website or Epitalk or anywhere other than the one I bought and the one I saw on Reverb here. I wonder how many there are around? Just so little info out there about these...

It still plays well. It's my only guitar (although I'm thinking about buying her a sister).

... It's my only guitar ...

WAT?!.... sounds like you may have gotten a hold of a rare-ish one?

I've purchased only one (1) epiphone in my entire life.

...It's fookin' staying, m8

There's a 2010 ltd ed Epi LP special single cut - this seems to be just an updated version; maybe they made a few and it wasn't well received or when Gibson changed ownership they decided to cull it? I really like the 2019 pearl logo LP special; I'm thinking of grabbing one of those... Probably shouldn't, but...

Anyways, this Epi is a cheap way into a LP P90 special set-neck.

Here in Korea, the 2019 special is the same price as the last few 2018 gold top classics (they are $2000). Decisions, decisions...

The guitar I'd really like (would help to replace my junior) is this one, but it's pricey...

I know you are in Korea, Grumpy. Let me ask you something due to my confusion. How much in American dollars does an Epiphone LP Custom ( for example) cost you to purchase in Korea? Then, How much would a Epiphone LP Custom Pro ? From the best estimate I have at Guitar Center, the Epi costs $679 here in the US. Then how much do comparable SG's in Gib vs Epi for you?

My curiosity gets me as to the "markup/added cost" a Korean dealer charges you ( when you can find a dealer who carries or can special order non stock) guitars for you. I really would think there would be some less costly method of getting you guitars than paying a lot extra over what a comparable guitar might cost us here in America, Canada, England etc to just walk into any one of numerous guitar stores available to us, and see many many guitars at great ranges of prices ranging from like $99-several thousands of dollars.

What do you think of something like this?

Depends on the dollar exchange rate to some extent.

At this moment in time, I am doing well against the US$ and British pound.

The 2019 guitars, new here, are expensive, but a few guitars like the 2018 traditional/classic and some CS seem slightly lower than US prices.

I forgot to update this thread after I upgraded the Epi Special; bone nut; Gotoh tailpiece (it was lying around doing nothing...); BK Nantucket in the neck; Peter Florence Voodoo in the bridge.

^ got rid of that bastard MG... Couldn't get a decent sound from it compared to the other two amps (the Yamaha sounded a lot better on the Marshall settings) - maybe there was something wrong with it? Gave it away to a friend...

Stuck a few stickers on it because I want it to be a fun, knock-about, guitar that I can ding, the dog can piss on, etc.

The guitar is nice, plays really well and sounds nice - kinda more pop and thinner treblier (made up word?) rock than the Gibson jnr which has a lot more honk, girth and drive. The tuners hold tune, but the D and G are not as smooth as I'd like, so the nut change helps, but it's not butter... The pickups sound tuneful and sweet, but I wouldn't say either one sounds amazing or as good as the Gibson P90 (considering they are pretty decent pickups, I expected them to be different but as good as or better than the standard Gibson P90; not to my ears). Actually, the Gibson jnr and Epi sit together well as two guitars in a mix, so in the band that I'm in, the other guitar player will probably use the Epi when we do gigs because it's tonally quite separate from the junior.

Here's a shot, as it was on my picture list, of the greenback I put in the Origin 20 - it made a big improvement for me; I can use the creamy grit at lower volumes as well as the overall sound being nicer than the stock speaker across the board:

I had a black epi like yours once - it was a nice player guitar.

p90 goodness..they are so snarl like...had a slide goin on the other day..sounds like it could cut wood..they just do something at the end of the chord tone...always makes me play southern dirty rock when p90 are used. These 2 just play well together tonallysouthload1.jpgsouthload1.jpgsouthload1.jpg
