NGD: Early Christmas Edition

I've wanted one of these for years, particularly in the Red Reign finish. Almost bought the Lambo Blue edition off a buddy in 2019, but cash was super tight then and he sold it to someone else when I couldn't scrape together enough funds.

Then, after seeing another buddy's video using his, it cemented how much I love this finish.

Since we just sold our townhouse and made a tidy sum on it, we decided to go a little splurge-y on Christmas this year. I get this, a neck pickup for my Franken7 and a bundle of guitar lessons from a local guy who is allegedly a legendary guitar teacher (more on that later).

Got it used for about $500 less than I could get it new, which made me pretty happy. It has like 3 or 4 very, very tiny dings in it that are super hard to see unless you're looking for them. My only quibble is the action is a little higher than I'd like, but it already has a tiny bit of fret buzz, so I'm not sure I'll be able to wrangle the Floyd to a place of lower action, proper intonation and no fret buzz.

Otherwise, I absolutely love it. Can't wait to really screw around with the Sustainiac system, too.

Now all that's left is to wait until December 25th, since I'm not allowed to play it til Christmas morning.

Dude that neck PU is beyond the outskirts of infinity o_Oo_Oo_O

I think it can, but it's a Floyd Rose, so anything you do means you have to do a lot of other things. If I could have gotten the Sustainiac without the Floyd, in this finish, I would have. But, I also don't have a 7 string with a trem, so now I do...

I've only done a few minor truss adjustments, so I'm a little nervous about doing that to this one, but that doesn't mean I won't try. LOL. I don't have a straight edge, but this sounds like a great excuse to buy the one I've had sitting in my Stew Mac shopping cart for the last year or so. :ROFLMAO:
A straight edge is not needed for truss rod adjustments. A capo helps, but that is not necessary either. All you really need is the tool to turn the truss rod

Hi Ray, Walk me through how one does a proper set up with just the allen or whatever wrench is needed to adjust the T rod?

basically:

Depress the string at the first fret and simultaneously approximately where the neck joins the body. I say approximately because some manufacturers have specific frets they recommend, but where the neck meets the body is a good rule of thumb. Then, check the clearance between the string and the top of the fret at the 7th fret (most particularly the low e string since it is the biggest). There should be no more clearance (relief) than the width of a thick piece of paper. Some people like more relief for various reasons. The capo comes in handy at the first fret so you free up a hand.

Too much relief and you tighten the TR (clockwise when looking down the neck). Too little and you loosen it (remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey)

There's an older guy on YouTube who does really cool videos on setting up guitars and basses and this is pretty much exactly what he says. Used his vids to set up a few basses and guitars and they turned out all right.

Went and found one before I hit "post reply":

I use the method Ray describes as well.
Since I am brand new to bass, I actually measured during my first set up. :ohno::ohno:
(For the relief and the E and G string action heights).
I dont have radius gauges so I just eyeballed the A and D string heights.
