This guitar came unexpected. In 2015, at the other forum place, I mentioned a neighbor who had an SG in his basement, but it was not for sale. It had belonged to his freind, nicknamed Bone, who played out a lot and loved this guitar. He died too young and his father gave the guitar to my neighbor, Bone's college buddy, as a keepsake. My neighbor, who does not play, held it for many years, at least a decade, and finally decided it deserved to be played. On Saturday, he asked me if I wanted to buy it. He gave me an incredible price for the guitar alone, but also gave me Bone's Fender Princeton Plus amp and his strap.
The guitar needed a serious cleaning, but other than that, it is stellar. It was nearly in tune out of the case. The neck is straight and the finish only has pick marks where they belong to show that it was played with heart. It appears that it was re-fretted at one point. My neighbor told me he had something "special" done to make it play great at one of the Sam Ash stores local to my home. They have a Plek machine, and given how well it plays with low action, I surmise this may have been done at the time of the re-fret. I also found a pick from our sponsor All Music in the case!
So on this new guitar day, a toast to Bone, and his fabulous SG. May his spirit flow through the strings and may I do him justice when I play.
