NGD, another SG Special

Good buy, you'll love it, and I hope it's perfect for you! I'm looking forward to the NGD thread. I wanted one of these too, so much, but ended up with an Epiphone version which is nice, but doesn't feel full fat milk to me.

I know everyone is expecting the TV yellow, but I wonder if you've tricked us and found a new cherry finish?

Well, I went over there at lunch to pick it up and had a bit of a snafu...since I played it last week someone managed to put a big dent in it. They offered me a discount but I said no - since I prepaid over the phone for them to hold it so I decided to have them order me a fresh one. Hopefully it takes no more than a week to arrive.

Did you ever get the SG?

It was the Les Paul Special I was referring to. Yes, I did get it. Love the guitar, but just as in my past experience not sold on P-90’s. I need to find something they do better than humbuckers in order to appreciate them fully but so far (3 weeks I think) I have not found anything that I don’t prefer ‘buckers for. Overall feel of the guitar is spectacular. Perfect fit and finish. HUGE neck. It’s really cool.

Glad to hear that the guitar is working out for you; Specials are fantastic, maybe not the grunt of a Junior, but they are sexy. &, a Gibson with perfect fit and finish - that's a winner, right there!

I seem to have the same experience with P90's. I always hear people rave about them, but when I buy a P90 guitar no matter what brand or price point, I just don't care for them...

Glad you like the guitar though! My SG Muse is on the truck for delivery today. We'll see if the new Epiphone offerings are any good.

Yah, I decided to give them another try. Still trying to figure out what it is about them that so many people love, but the guitar is really great so it's worth spending the time with to try to unlock the mysteries. Worse comes to worse I will drop some mini-humbuckers in it and move on, because otherwise it's awesome.

Hope you like the Muse, that model really caught my eye. Report back.

Here you go! EMG Pickups / P-90 / Guitar / Electric Guitar Pickups, Bass Guitar Pickups, Acoustic Guitar Pickups

All kidding aside though (but if you do do it, let me know, im curious how those sound) I'm with ya gball on the whole p90 thing. I played on an sg classic way back when those where in production, as well as a les paul with p90's in them. I had fun on them, but couldn't help but play blues on em, which i suppose is what they where really for. I know you can get heavy sounds on em but i don't see myself really using them enough to justify getting a p90 equipped guitar.

I'm mostly experimenting with it for clean and edge-of-breakup tones. The P-90's sound like a hobo's a$$ with gain, so I am trying to see if I can coax some single-coil goodness out of them through a clean Fender amp. Limited success so far with any kind of drive tones but real clean with a touch of delay/reverb/tremolo is pretty nice if not exactly inspiring to play. I feel like I will find something useful for them if I keep trying.

you could slap some mini hums in ther ;)

That's the plan if I can't come to terms with the P-90 sound. I've owned a number of guitars with them over the years, even an original '50's one, and just never have cracked the code. I took another shot at it because I really like the vibe of the model but I am willing the throw in the towel and replace the pickups if I have to...gonna give it a few months before I know for sure. The guitar itself is awesome: feels great, plays great, looks great, super resonant and spanky.

I'll say this I swapped all my Gibbons pops for off brands .......huge tone improvement
Especially my JR it was weak and crappy till I put a new pup in and it snarls and barks now

I helped my old bandmate switch his stock P-90's for a set of Lollars....supposed to be the best of the best, right? I guess I could have talked myself into thinking there was a big enough difference to justify the cost over just twisting a couple knobs on the amp, but I personally have just never heard that much of an "improvement" from switching out a set of pickups unless it was a radical change, like going from a PAF-style to a high-output ceramic or something. More like subtle shades of the same color, the way my wife has 15 tubes of lipstick that are all basically the same color but she swears are different.

No, it's more of an overall character thing. I am trying to come to terms with the P-90 genre, not a specific set of P-90's, if you know what I mean. It's a family sound that I've never been able to really bond with but really do want to explore and try to figure out.

I will say this - the stock pickups are really hot. Definitely the hottest of any P-90 guitar I have owned.
