NGD 2017 Les Paul Faded T

Really torn with this guitar. I bought it to mod it. I work graveyards Saturday and Sunday and planned to spend Monday afternoon swapping out the pickups for a Sigil set I’ve had sitting for a while. Got up just after noon, had coffee and breakfast, then went downstairs to work on the guitar. I’ll just plug it in and give it a quick play so I have the tone in my head and can compare it to the new pickups I thought. Bad move! Two hours later I’m still playing it. I really like the 490s in this guitar. The Sigils are going to have to wait for another guitar.

Ha ha... I'm not surprised that you changed your mind on yanking the 490s. My '02 SG Special Faded is stock with the 490s, and I like them. Fortunately, a positive and consistent trait from Gibson is that they make really good pickups.

I've had several guitars with 490s. They seem to suit some guitars in others they aren't so good. I had some in an SG that I took out and replaced with some cheap PAF clones. The PAF clones were way better in that guitar. I then put the 490s in an 80s Squier HH strat with Gibson scale neck. They were awesome in that guitar. It all depends on the guitar and the pickups I guess.

It's good you stuck with the 490's and you're right...they kind of sound different in other guitars. I had 490's in my Gibson SG Special but I did a pick up swap with my black 2006 Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Now my SG has the Epi Classic Alnico pick ups which sound great in the guitar. The Gibson 490's in my Epi LP is one of the best sounds that I ever got maybe due to the Les Paul shape and weight and or the 500 K ohm pots which really let the sound and and makes it sound like a pure Les Paul should.

Kerry you have a very nice guitar! I have the 490's in my Les Paul Studio, they are the only pickups
I never even thought of changing. I played a used LP studio at a friend's guitar store and hated it. I was testing a Vox AC15 that I kept for three days. Oh that guy and I are not friends anymore.
I went to Guitar Center and found a new 2014 Studio and it even made the in store Vox amp sound ok. That was the 490's and it even made my fully moded Monoprice amp sound so good that it was the last nail in the coffin for the Chinese Vox stuff.
