NGD 120th Anniversary Melody Maker

I'm not liking the Kent Armstrong bridge pickup much the more I play it, it's a noiseless so somehow it's a humbucker in there. It sounds good as far as a pickup goes, but it doesn't have that P90 thing like I want. Plus, even tho it's the neck version it's hot at 17.6k, the stock neck pickup at 8k is about twice as loud. I ordered a Duncan Vintage P90 on a recommendation. I'm looking forward to getting it in there for some "real P90" goodness!

That thing is pretty awesome! You're going to love it so much more with that Duncan installed too!

Yeah, there's just one problem. The pickup arrived today and it's got spacers between the magnets and the base plate that make it taller than a normal P90. It's about 1/4' too tall and doesn't fit. I'm trying to figure out if I can make it work somehow, but unless I deepen the pickup route I don't see any other way. :(

I might just remove the spacers, I can't imagine how they can have any effect on the tone. I wonder if it isn't just a "vintage correct" thing to make the pickup taller because back in the day they weren't height adjustable.

Well, that isn't going to work. I could remove the spacers, but then I'd also have to cut off the ends of the screw poles (or buy shorter ones) to make it work and that would be changing the characteristics of the pickup. Plus there's no guaranty it'll fit until I do it and see. I've been looking at other P90 options and they all have the screw poles extending down thru the base plate.

I think my best option here is to deepen the pickup cavity. That would open the door for me to try whatever P90 I want. So now I just have to figure out the best way to do that without a router. :hmmm:

Square ended drill bit on a cordless?

Ok, this whole thing started to stress me out too much, I put the Kent Armstrong back in and I'm just not going to worry about changing the pickup yet until I figure out what I want to do. It's really not a bad pickup. I did change the bridge and tuners out. I think the black hardware looks better.
