The only planned expansion of my rig/herd/guitarsenal this year was finishing the Esquire/Les Paul Junior Frankenstein’d partscaster for which I’ve been accumulating parts for the last few years.

I really, truly had not planned on buying any new gear this year.

and then I bought two guitars and an amp in the last two months.

I already did a thread about the guitar I’m most excited about:

Thread 'Happy New Guitar Day—Telecaster Custom!'

But I’m also happy and excited about this one as well…

A Gretsch Gin Rickey acoustic with a chrome and pearloid Deltoluxe pickup (mostly) permanently attached in the soundhole.

It’s basically a Gretsch Jim Dandy parlor acoustic with a passive pickup (there was a Jim Dandy model that had the same pickup installed, but those were less common).

It kinda reminds me of the old Stella guitar that my older brother had (and eventually destroyed through neglect) when I was a kid.

It plays very well—fairly focused tone and loud volume (just like most parlor guitars)—medium/smaller-but-not-small neck that works pretty well for my arthritic and eczema-accursed hands.

Plugged in, it sounds more like an old Sam (Lightnin’) Hopkins song than a piezo-equipped acoustic…which I find very cool and ultimately more pleasing musically…it doesn’t sound like an acoustic guitar, but doesn’t sound like your average electric, either.

The action is a little high—higher than I generally like—but still playable. I will either adjust it myself or have someone adjust it (more likely the latter)…unlike the old Stellas that this is reminiscent of, this one has a truss rod, so it should be an easy enough fix.

I got it for a really good price with a super-nice Gator hardshell case thrown in…

I really, really wasn’t planning on buying any guitars this year…

Dang it.

Very nice score sir! That looks like a truckload of fun!
I do have a soft spot for the “parlor guitar” class. Twelve frets of fun!
May it bring you much joy!
