NG Project!

Now I'm wondering again.... How wide is the neck at 22nd fret? My LP is 2.217" at that fret. The pocket is either unusually wide, or that neck is extra narrow at the heel

I had to narrow the neck to get it to fit. According to the builder, it is a strat shaped neck pocket. However, I had him space the bridge for 24.75 scale, so a standard strat neck is no good, and would look whacky on this guitar anyway

I'm glad you got the strings lined up with the bridge nicely but neck pick up seems wider than usual...that's a bummer. It's a challenge but as I mentioned before you'll work something out. I guess patience is the key. I can't wait to see how the guitar will look in the end once you sort out these annoying problems. Good luck Ray.

I successfully relocated the neck, so I won a battle. Unfotunately, the strings will be too far off the pole pieces, so I am back to moving the bridge. Now I need walnut dowels!

Here is a close up of the neck shift

I know pics can be deceiving, but it looks here like the strings are running straight along the neck & the pickup is quite a way "off". Can the bridge be moved that far without the high E falling off the neck? I do admire your perseverance. The guy that did these sure knows how to f_ _k up a really nice piece of wood. Cheers

The only reason the strings are in line with the neck is because it is altered. I routed the back of the neck to shift it to the bass side by about 8mm. When I shift it back, the low E is off the board, but the strings line up over the pickups. I can use a normal neck and have it line up over the pickups if I move the bridge

As I read this, I think I understand the scenario. If it were me, I would do my best to determine a center line in the body of the guitar. Then put it in a jig to hold it from moving. Then I would clamp the neck that is to be the final neck in the pocket of the body and align it so that it is dead center on the center line I carry through on up thru the center of the head stock. Either using a laser or a long straight edge, etc. This will also show me how centered the pup routs, bridge, tail piece etc are and where exactly to drill the holes if needed.

We will see how Ray sorts this all out.

I'd also contemplate fabricating a template from another properly drilled and routed "factory" body and see how well I can line it up on my center line to see how to lay out the exact position of the holes for the hardware etc.

Paper/ poster board is cheap.

I thought about what chili said about templates, so I thought of this for the neck shaping this time around. It will give me shape and depth, while the cardboard will be easy to work with for tracing and sanding. I have not played with Playdough in a looong time!

Nice work and I agree, take the value in learning and experience even if the project is a bust.

I hope it will not be a bust, but it will be "special"!

Nope, no way. I can't see with your drive and tenacity, this being a total bust. Maybe not as planned, but something good will occur here.

I think the wood is beautiful, and I see why you were attracted to buy it.....but, I'm kinda surprised you haven't started building your own body, and adapting a neck of choice. It's the next step for your progress, and It sure would be a fantastic post. Plus you probably have spare parts coming out your ears. Not trying to detract from what's going on here, but I see an RVA original down the road. It's inevitable.
