New Mics...

Quite recently i bought new mics - one of my good old Pearl CR57 starts to hum loudly and i don't know if i could repair it.

And here they are, a pair of Haun MBC660. Haun is a small German company specialized in high quality studio microphones - and this is their entry level product. The better ones reach the level of Neumann and maybe almost Schoeps, but for a lower price. Bought for recording, but today i'm going to mic Verena's Sax in order to check them (and i expect a noticeably better sound than with the Pearl):

IMG_5925.JPG IMG_6290.JPG IMG_6292.JPG They are nice, I thought you said mices? Like the little bastards that get in to my cognac when I'm sleeping. Mics be cool, I have a couple Shure 57's that are perfect. I love that color too. I mic that hand held recorder, the little ones on top do lack a lot. Blue Tooth head phones help to block out sounds that are not a part of the work in progress. Max thinks he knows everything, he yells out stuff from way up on the stairs. He thinks he can get away with it because he is black.

Well, i do own a Zoom R8 which makes a fairly good job as a field recorder with only two mics. And i can chose between the Hauns in AB and a Superlux S502 ORTF mic.
For more complex tasks a could use a small mixer, something like a Allan & Heath ZED10i which can interface 4 condensor mics independently into a notebook.

This is a low or entry level Tascam and I am still learning it. The mics that it came with are good enough for most things. When I have to record a solo or riff to send to a friend for professional use, I use better mics.

Today i "abused" one the Hauns during our rehearsal to mic the sax.
Even over the PA speakers - a pair of EV SX100+ - the Haun was a bit more "open" than the Pearl, and, as hoped, it did not need any equalisation. Unfortunately it was a bit more sensitive to feedback than the Pearl - but that's something i almost expected (we could handle it...).

The Pearl can be battery operated - a huge advantage live.

IMG_6287.JPG I really didn't care for the good old days, acoustic guitars into a mic then on to a reel to reel. Nothing but trouble with the tape and the ten ton monster crap Telenfunken or Roberts. Sony came out with a very nice machine but it was a bitch to operate. All done, now give your days and days of work to the Mail Man. Good God I am lucky to be sain. Now nothing is spelled, mid wav, jig, other stuff like NFL, not for long I guess. I need words. Numbers and the like.
