New Kit

Love the headstock overlay.
Not sure how you intend to do the finish but here's a black edge burst that I did a while back in spray can lacquer.

I just spray color over the binding, then carefully scrape the paint off after it's cured.

The black edgeburst would be a nice contrast with the chrome accents.

Found a little time today, cut the headstock shape from square across the top.

With so much chrome on the body I'm playing with a polished 0.5mm alloy veneer for the headstock.
Once tuners are fitted and a custom logo applied I have hopes it will look cool.

Did a mock up to get the feel. Honest opinion please, this look or paint?

The Metal............. it will look great along with the metal in the resonator body areas.

That looks good. The overlay might add some rigid mass and sustain to the headstock and guitar. You stated that the alloy veneer is .5mm thick. Is it very flexible at this thickness? How much do you think the plate weighs?

Such a small piece held free is very easy to bend but glued to the timber would make the headstick more rigid.
I calculated it would weigh approx 18 grams or 0.635 ounces.

Yep. If you use the stuff i posted, here is the run down:

- coats 5-10 minutes apart until it has a sufficient amount for 1 application. If you wait for longer than that, wait 24-36 hours and light sand before next application, with 1,000 grit. Wait approx 2 weeks before full buff to shine.

Developing plan, things seem to change after each small step.
Working on the sides and neck... A couple of days ago I used oil based primer (left can in photo), two coats sanded after each.
Then two coats of oil based black (middle can in photo), sanded each progressively down to 1,500 grit (wet with soap to lubricate).
Third can (right in photo) is oil based poly and thanks for advice on how to use (above). Before I use I have to decide on colour for the back and resolve the QUESTION ...
Neck and sides now black, the back will soon also have a colour (possibly deep purple) and the front will remain natural. If all painted surfaces are smooth but dull from 1,500 wet sand should I apply the poly as directed and the colour will pop (shine again) or do I put a final un-sanded (shiny) coat of paint before the poly???

Nice work! I have not sprayed clear over paint, only stain, but it is my understanding that the final coat (in this case poly) will be what determines your shine. I do not think you need to polish up the black.

Thanks for comment Ray.
I'll make up a test piece and try the options side by side. Only problem with this is as you explained the two weeks before final buff. Will see how it goes.
Any other comments welcomed.

Comment: THAT THING IS LOOKING KILLER! well done!!!

Well thanks BUT when asking for comment I was particularly looking for paint advice.
Just 10 min ago as an experiment I gave the back of the sanded headstock a short polish with Brasso. Now I'm even more confused :-(
Do I accept a reasonable polish on the paint (as in photo) and poly the natural timber front or poly the lot.
I figure if these are the biggest problems I have then I'm going OK.

I can laugh at myself or my small failures :-)
I tell the woman in the paint shop I want (for back of the guitar) purple. Purple so deep and strong that in bad light it could be mistaken for black.
She assures me that the product offered will dry much darker and I'm so dumb I not only buy it but lay it down on the job.
New day and an hour later most of it has gone. Chance of rain so it won't be sprayed today, BUT it will be BLACK this time.

I suspect both she and I are colour bind :-(
AND yes I probably did all of the above ;-)

Is there any reason you have it in front of the heater? Attempts to speed the dryimg process can lead to bad results, and as you said, this is not a race
