Going to have some fun with this. Going to make it my own.

A producer friend suggested this song when asked for his opinion) because he felt the solo was stylistically similar to how I play, which I found very humbling.

This song was previously suggested by a TTR mate!!!

More to come...

I saw Danzig in Toronto way back in the early 1990's. It was a good show but the venue was hot as hell. Me and a friend actually met Danzig before the show at a strip club downtown...what a coincidence.

Ok, so originally Glenn wrote this in B Major, and it just seemed too high there for me to put the power behind the vocals that I felt like it needed. After some experimentation, we dropped the key to B♭m and I tracked the bass and guitars both tuned to E♭. We just completed the basic tracks this evening. We kept pretty darn close to the 147 tempo. All that's left now is lead guitar and vocals.

That's tomorrow's project... :-)

Ok, listening to playbacks this morning and this song has really evolved into a much harder version, just what I was shooting for!!! This song doesn't sound like much, but let me tell you, there are some really unusual time signatures in the original. We spent quite a while listening to the original in the studio yesterday because it just wasn't coming out right. So, the drummer then laid a set of tracks down drumming along to the original song in his headset. That was the magic bullet so to speak. That got the tempo and drum arrangement exactly correct. You don't notice the timing changes when listening, but you sure do when playing it!!!

The bass track is very straightforward and also follows the original arrangement. Again, this was tracked on my "studio" $60 Ibanez Import and Fender Rumble 40 going line-out direct to the USD interface.

The original intro is played with very little gain, and I played this (as usual) with a lot of gain, heavy pick attack and choking off each phrase in the intro to try and keep the guitar under control....and it wasn't easy. I also kept the left/right speaker orientation, similar to the original, but put a lot more fury in the guitar work. Accidental pinch harmonics, volume swells, from the sudden release of all 6 muted strings - during the quiet sections - was all left in place.

On the right speaker, there is only a one-take, single-track for the rhythm guitar. On the left speaker, the doubletracked intro begins and carries all the way through the song. At the beginning of the yet untracked vocal section, a second doubletracked rhythm guitar parts kicks in on the left speaker and it also carries through the entire song.

In this version, there has been no reverb added or noise reduction. All guitar parts tracked on my 2016 Gibson Les Paul (498T) through my Blackstar ID-Core 100 Watt and no effects.

More to come!!!

MOTHER - DANZIG COVER IN B♭m (UNFINISHED)

If it's the John Christ connection, I respectfully submit that his work in Samhain is better than anything Danzig ever recorded, even though it was with Glen Danzig also. I would also respectfully submit that "Mother" is easily one of the worst songs Danzig ever put on an album and if you wanted to stick with them there are much better choices. Why it (Mother) got so popular is a question for the ages.

Hard to say really....I've never followed Danzig, but I've really enjoyed changing "Mother" and putting my spin on it....

Nice job Robert. The reason that song became so popular is simple ... It's because it's a good song. And you rocked it bro. Killer lead tone too.

Thanks, Man! I wanted to give the tune a heavier feel all around with "meaner" or perhaps more interesting vocals. I may compose better solos later, but we wanted to wrap this up before we leave on vacation...

The solos were cut in one take - literally one track - about 2:00am and boy do they show it!!!

I feel like the solos lack imagination, lack energy or something, so I plan on retracking/recomposing them, staying close to the original arrangements enough to make it recognizable.

I might track the new solos on the DSL40C for a change of pace...

My drummer pal suggested retracking the solos on the double neck for a thicker sound, using the DSL40C and running it flat-out against the Weber attenuator.....

Thoughts???

Sadly...the solo recomposing will have to wait until we get back, so you guys are stuck witg the crappy, rushed solos....
