Nevr-Dull as string refresher -

If your strings are feeling a bit dull from all that PH, try deoxidizing with a swipe of this stuff. The material is like cotton impregnated with a metal cleaning chemical. I have been using it to clean frets and started using it on my strings. I have not had any adverse consequences to my fretboards. The strings sing again. As an added bonus, you get a lot for a little money. A can goes a long way since it only taes a small pinch of material to clean your strings.

I was just thinking about something like this. The SX Liquid I just got comes new in box with D' Addario strings.
There are some / many random small rust colored / corrosion spots on them.
I will change them out soon but it got me thinking.

I have used that product on other clean up projects, works good, have to go look for mine.
I dont think I would use it on the wound strings.

Does it appear any residue or any material is left in the valleys of the windings?
That would be my concern.

Smoking a tiny ball of the wadding in a glass bowl pipe produces hallucinogenic events...

I think remember reading Eddie Van Halen saying he used to boil old strings to clean them so he could use them longer. I guess the Nevr Dull is an easier option!

Feeling and sounding funky means more than just dirty - it means they have overstretched and started to flat spot. It means dead strings, so time to replace. It's not wasting them if they are dead.

My strings come off looking like ramen noodles....

I agree. But, I can see how keeping strings clean could prolong their usefulness by removing skin oils and acids after playing. This, of course, doesn't prevent the overstretching and flat-spotting issues you've noted. But, it may help help minimize effects of corrosion. I think doing this is most effective if you do it after each playing/practicing session. If you only do it once in a while, or after you notice the strings are getting funky, I'd think it's too late. The junk on the strings potentially has been corroding them the whole time between cleaning sessions.

I've kind of fallen out of the habit of doing this, but I used to use a small cloth cut from a T-Shirt to which I'd apply a bit of rubbing alcohol. Then I'd do a quick swipe down each string after playing. My sweat can be rather acidic, so I figured it was a good idea and I'd always get some residue off the strings.

Honestly, I should probably start doing that again.

I ALWAYS wash my hands thoroughly before playing.
I ALWAYS pinch my wipe down cloth (clean cotton rag from some clothing article) around and rub down each string when done a playing session.
When i take a break I often wipe the cloth up and down across all strings from tailpiece to nut.
Often, I wash my hands again before resuming, and certainly if i was eating, or snuggling with the dogs - both have Lab blood and their coats get oily quickly or pretty quickly / a few days after baths.

But yeah, I start to notice the stretchy / bendyness character of the unwound strings change, and start to creep flat. Then I'll check for those flat spot divots. Then it certainly is time.

I dont really hear the dullness, though new strings sound a little brighter - which could mean I did not notice the relative dull sound of the old string, making it APPEAR the new strings sound bright.

I have a string change on deck today if my Musiclily tuners show up.
I will finally get some pics and a NGD thread on the SX Liquid over the weekend.
