Picked up an Altec Lansing 1431A - 31 band eq on my local CL today.
Listing said it was pulled from a church PA system.

Screw terminal input / output with some "expertly" installed XLR adapters.

31beq02.jpg

Seller accepted an offer I couldn't refuse, so it's on the workbench.

31beq03.jpg

Terminal strips are each on a little 3 wire harness to the board.

31beq04.jpg

Just gotta liberate the wires and rig up some jacks in those rectangular slots.

31beq05.jpg

Made a little cover to mount the jacks.

31beq06.jpg

Soldered a couple jacks on the wiring leads.
Had to squeeze them into one slot to avoid stuff on the board.

31beq07.jpg

Seems to be working...

31beq08.jpg

Just need to make a couple brackets and it'll fit in the shell I made for my John H before the cherry cabs.
$50 and some junk from the stash - less than a used MXR or Boss EQ pedal. :yesway:

Kinda a solution without a problem - not sure where I'm going to put it yet...

It's really funny
that good EQ is probably the most important part of any professional sound system...
( I call it "the heart" of any pro sound system)
But it's also the one piece of gear that almost nobody realizes that they need.
And it's the one thing that people will avoid buying, the most.

How much does a pro sound system suffer, without a 1/3 octave EQ?
A lot.

Got to be careful and not get one that smears or blurs your signal though. A lot of them rear their ugly heads in active mode while being completely flat.

Not saying this one does, I'm just saying in general. I've had a few of those as most of us probably have.

Ok, pretty much decided this amp is the one that needs a good loop EQ.
The unit works well and is not adding any signal noise - just a faint ambient transformer hum.
Gave it a bit of a cleaning and Deoxit in all the sliders.

That black tolex shell is not going to work here, so it went back to the stash shelf.
Got enough cherry scraps for a frame of sorts.
Nothing as elaborate as the cabs & shells, just a 3/4" edge box all around, maybe...
I could also make some kinda thinner enclosure in black something and not try to match the cherry.
I'd like to keep it from being much taller.

Welp, I couldn't not do it.
Made a low profile 1U cherry shell from some scraps from the cab project.

31beq12.jpg

Top & bottom are about 5/16" thick leftovers from the old TV cabinet door panels.
The rest of those panels are the backs of the speaker cabs.

31beq13.jpg

Shoulder cut the 7/8" sides and put in 10-32 threaded inserts for the cap screw mounting bolts.

Finish was dry enough today for handling and assembly, but I'm going to let it cure for a few more days before I wire it all up again.

I've never had an eq that wasn't noisy as f... I'm getting ready to send my GE-7 to Analogman to mod for me. I have the form and everything ready to go, I just haven't sent it yet.

That looks amazing!

I've had a few pedals that were noisy on certain amps, or with certain other pedals.
Mostly drive pedals that could also be quieted with a gate.
Separate power supplies for front end and loop also seems to help sometimes.

So far, I've had good luck with EQ's.
I have 2 MXR 10 band and a GE-7 that are perfectly quiet in the loops on my 3 Origin amps.
This 31 band seems to work well on this amp.

I have an MXR 10 band somewhere. Same thing, noisy as all get out every time I've tried to use it. I've just read so many good things about the Analogman's GE-7, and it's not that that much $$ (compared to buying a modded pedal) to have it modified so I'm going to give it a try. Luckily I have an older one that can be modified, can't do it with the newer ones.
