NCD: Peavey 430A 412 cabinet

I picked up that back panel today. It is slightly too big and will have to be sanded along the edge until it fits. I will call the place again on Monday. Not their fault, it's just something that needs to be sorted. I can't get it to go in properly and it certainly wouldn't do it with the tolex covering. Yes I got fingerprints on it :(
He used a 28mm spade bit to make the hole for the new jack plate, which arrived in the mail today together with a type 11 jack.

I bought two metres each of red and black wire from Jaycar. Cost $5

The tolex will have to be ordered from overseas.

Seems like my dad might have a can of the adhesive spay for the vinyl.

Here's photos of the new back panel, the wires, and the jack and plate. I have screwed the cab together for now to protect the speakers.

Dave, I just got 2 of those same single jack plates. Did you get a simple Switchcraft type jack to attach to it? That is all I did instead of one of those CLiff types.

Oh and I agree about the Single option 16 ohm mono and be done with it choice on the cabs scenario. The stereo business and too likely possibility of putting a 16 ohm amp into a 4 ohm cab setting, seems like too high a risk to have cabs work that way. I put tape over my jack that would yield 4 ohm. This way I only go into the 16 on my Marshall cab. End of story.

As for the Behringer cab. I will likely never need a full stack, so it will likely get sold off. I will just rewire it properly and call it a day.

Yes I just got the Switchcraft type 11 short thread mono jack

The Peavey will be my workhorse cab, replacing the Ashton. It will live in the garage and go to band practice and gigs.

The Orange stays in the house and most likely will only come out for recording sessions. I don't bother with full stacks any more.

HAHA, DD, I just got the Type 11 exact same mono jacks, and jack plates from Antique Electronic Supply. I basically bought 2 of each for if I make two, 2x12 cabs.
They also stock the new and old style Marshall Ohm Selector switches and switch parts, which I stocked up on. I will be installing the best option in my orange Marsh Superbass head.

Also, the Stevens cab is wired the same as my Marshall while my Behringer cab should have been like yours, but wasn't.
Yours appears to have the positives to positives and negatives to negatives in the vertical pairs with the blue and yellow wires then white/black---red/black from top speaker =/- to the jack.

My Behringer was cross wired with negative to positive on each pair of speakers joined with the green wires. then how else mine was ALL wrong, instead of 2 + and 2 - coming off the top speaker like yours, it has one wire red white blue black coming from each of the 4 speakers + and - on down to the jack plate.

Needless to say, the seller or whoever put the speakers in and service his amps, was a total dunce. Glad I made sure to check everything and recheck.

In case I haven't totally lost everyone by now, I finally got back to test wiring my 4- 12 inch 16 ohm Redcoat Governor speakers both with the Marshall jack plate and the Behringer one. Part of my issue with the Behringer also turned out to be a loose fitting female part of the left jack which was causing erratic Ohms readings. SO, I shined a bright light into the Cliff type jack and saw the spring part was backed away from the path and barely catching the tip of the speaker cable. I took a tiny screwdriver and pressed the spring inward till it tensioned the spring enough to press on the speaker cable end tighter. I now have both jack plates reading within the specs they call for in Mono and stereo, right and left. Same wiring of the speakers, but the Marshall yields 4 or 16 in Mono and 8 in stereo. The Behringer is 16 in mono either right or left, and 8 in Stereo, right and left. My only guess is this all happens because of differences in the traces of the Marshall vs Behrnger PCB's.

Yeah, Dave. I would consider taking the whole cab and the back to them. They can trim and fit trim and fit, until it fits just right. Not too tight, not too loose. The thought I have is MDF can absorb moisture from humidity and swell some, so make sure it isn't too super tight fit. Then Seal it with Tolex, and at mimimum paint on the inside or even tolex that too.

DD thanks for letting me ramble on endlessly about my cab. I found that knowing how to verify OHMS and having a full supply of Croc clip test leads on hand is my best friend when it comes to making sure the wiring is oriented properly according to Series, Parallel, Series/Parallel and then using my meter to check out how I routed everything to make sure it is right before soldering. Especially in closed back front loaded cabs.

Yes, the pics help and were exactly as I expected. White and Red are + and the Blacks are -

My jack plate is exactly the same for the Behringer, except instead of 2 black wires, the one next to the red is marked BLUE on the PCB.

Like you said about the PCB, I will likely rewire things for 16 ohm with a single input and be on the safe side. For the PCB and Switch deal, I will know how to wire it if I ever go to sell the cab with original spec speakers in it and keep the Eminence ones.
