My Strange Day Yesterday: I Fixed a PC and Got In Trouble With My Band:

Yesterday was a normal day as far as my work days go. I'm not a really smart guy, but i do enjoy helping push the cart put of the mud, so to speak. Yesterday I had that opportunity.

At the studio, we were working on a commercial soundtrack when the main PC "bluescreened" and said "WHEA Uncorrectable Error."

The engineer freaked out because there were a lot of files in that device and he couldn't access anything. I offered to help, despite knowing nothing about computers.

I pulled the unit out of the cabinet and it was literally plugged solid. I mean the external vents were covered completely and it was totally full of dirt. I took it to a auto repair shop nearby and they were kind enough to allow me use of their compressed air.

I made sure to hold the fans so the air wouldn't over-speed them. That's when I realized the rear chassis fan was locked up. I borrowed a drill but and twisted it by hand to bore a hole over the shaft and it was dry as a bone. I used some borrowed silicon lube to free it up.

When I got it back to the studio, we plugged it in and the PC went into "Checkdisk." I suggested a new PC be purchased immediately, and they sent a courier to go and score a brand new Lenovo.

After about an hour, the PC completed this operation and started normally. All the Pro Tools files were recoverable. The new PC arrived and a tech was called in to do the data transfer and backup.

I felt pretty good about that.

Continuing....

Then at rehearsal, I was making pirate faces at our guitarist (like Joe Walsh did to Don Felder during Hotel California) and I kinda got in trouble for that.

I am normally VERY reserved, and I just got loose.

I think it was distracting him a little and my solos were too loud. It was well received and I openly apogized. We all had a good chuckle about it afterwards at our post-rehearsal meeting.

The singer was really cool to me.
She said, "I've never heard Rob play like that. Honestly, I gotta say I'm impressed. That song sounded great!!!"

Normally, I'm really, really reserved and just do my rhythm work and stay on the down low, but last night I was high & wired from a 12 hour day of multiple pots of coffee and I just let it slip....

It's a bit tougher these days...but back in the day (mid 70's) it was easy for me. It was not MY band technically, BUT I owned the PA (big deal back then) AND we practiced in my basement. So basically I could do whatever I wanted. I rarely did anything horrible, but I could get my way fairly easily if I wanted. They wanted to play Frampton, I wanted to play Mountain and Sabbath and Beatles. We didn't play Frampton, but I did go along with other suggestions of theirs, like BTO, Bowie and Steve Miller.

I love these people.. they are super cool...I just prefer harder music... :-)

Motorhead, Megadeth, etc. But, what we play, an eclectic mix of 80's pop rock and some country dance tunes, keeps us working constantly.
Pretty same mindset then! I was always big into ACDC, iron maiden, black sabbath, motorhead, judas priest etc but in a band, played a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR and ZZ Top because thats what the audiences wanted. I love those bands but i always went to the heavier stuff lol

I agree!!! We get continued work by giving them what they want!!!
